Why did they cancel Rome?

It doesn't make any sense to me. I feel like they always do this. They cancel great programming that actually teaches us history in an interesting way. Is anyone else really upset about this show being cancelled?

I had not heard it was canceled. I don't get to stay up with news of television shows, but I can tell you that I am very disappointed that Rome has been cancelled. Titus Pullo was one of my all-time favorite characters. I thought I had a decent understanding of Roman history, this series sparked my interest in learning more, and I now realize my knowledge was nowhere near what I thought. I don't have HBO so I will have to wait til the second season comes out on DVD.

The second season is GREAT! I think it's comming out on DVD very soon. Titus Pullo was also one of my favorite characters! I am a history major, and it was awesome seeing history come alive in such detail on this show.

Its almost finished for us in the UK (3 episodes to go). In my opinion, they have managed to wrap up the entire conversion of the Roman Republic to Empire. Its a fitting ending, since everything gets a bit boring afterwards (the only really interesting stuff is the Germanic wars, split from the East, conversion to Christianity and fall of Rome). I suppose they could start another series with another story arc, and to save money they could invest more in CGI and reuse props from this series. Its been really awesome, and a blast. But as they say: All good things...

Agreed. I hate it when good things have to come to an end...but you are correct. Thank you for your input!

If I remember correctly, Rome was cancelled for a few reasons. The first one that I can think of is that they only planned to make one season of Rome at first. In England (because this show was a co-production with British televison) this isn't all that uncommon a practice. Since the show ended up being so popular, I believe a second season was planned. However, this season ended being the last because the production value of the show was just too high. Think about it, they were so into accuracy in that show that all the fabrics and sets were very expensive to make. Also, the armor was hammered by hand to make it look like it should. Even with all the money I'm sure the companies had, I'm sure it was a huge undertaking. It really is a shame though. Rome is one of the best series I have seen in a very long time.

I agree. I read that cost was a big factor in the reason it being cancelled. I'm glad that it was so acurate, and that people are upset about it being cancelled. Even though I know history well, and knew what big events were going to happen next, I could not stop watching it! Thank you for your input!

It was a great series, which was innovative, modern and historically informative. I'm dissappointed to hear its ended. Do you know why its been cancelled?

I've just read the other threads to this discussion and realise my question has been answered.

I loved the show but I think that the history of the Roman Empire gets kinda boring after this. Who can name any other emperors after Ceasar? (besides the one from the series)I loved the acuracy in the sets and costumes so I was sad to see it end.

I too am upset about the cancellation of Rome. It was such a beautifully done series and told such a great and important story. Since when did people stop caring about our history. It's where we came from, part of what makes us the civilization we are today. The actors they had were great too and I hope that they all moved on to do great things since they won't be in one of the best series I've seen in a long time anymore.

I thought it needed more than two seasons. Also they did not use whistles like they did in that battle in the beginning episode, so it was not exactly accurate. We have no idea whether Gaius Julius Caesar did not father Caesarion, and Mark Anthony's wife did not just have a daughter and she did take care of Cleopatra's children by her husband. There was also the minor characters. I had no idea what happened to that servant boy, Rubio. If Rome had developed, it might show a more personal history of slavery, how they gain their freedom, etc. I know they did use Elani (sorry if I spelled the name right), but I did hear it was common for men to manumit slave girls so they could marry her, but men were usually freed when the owner was old. In the movie, Cleopatra starring Elizabeth Taylor, one of the soldiers of Anthony's army was called Rubio and I wonder if that was the reason they introduced that boy in the first season.

I loved this show and I thought when they started it, they announce or at least implied the series would last for 5 years (seasons). Thus I was really disappointed when Rome was canceled. It needs the last 5 years or at least one more to bring Octavian into power. I am quite exasperated at being short changed by the best television series. It seems the only things that seem to survive for very long is junk.
