My county fair has a program for children from kindergarten to eighth grade called "Read & Ride Program". Each student that reads a book gets 3 ride passes and can earn 6 ride passes by reading 2 books. Do you think this is a good idea? Does your area have programs to encourage reading?
I think this will encourage more children to read during the summer. Several places have reading programs in this area including the library, several book stores and one of the local radio stations. Each one has had many young people attend according to the information in the newspaper.

Hi Fishmomma,
I think that is a great idea to encourage reading in kids. In my country, we have a govt.initiative called 10,000fathers that encourages father/child bonding through reading activities.

Thanks for sharing the link to the site. I enjoyed the information. That is an excellent program and wish my area had one for fathers.

Wow, I think this is a great idea. Almost anything that encourages kids to read should be given a chance to work. I'm not aware of any programs like this where I live.

The libraries in our area (I believe all of Ontario as they are working together with a major bank), have a program every summer. They have a different theme every year but the kids don't have to stick to reading books of that theme. Every time they read a book they tell the coordinator about the story. For every book read they get a ballot to fill out. Local stores donate prizes, each numbered, each with its own bag. The kids put their ballots in the bags of the prizes they want to win. They can put them all in for the same prize, or spread them out. My daughter won a prize one year. Now at 10 and 14 they no longer have an interest in the program.
The idea of rides at a carniaval is a good idea too. Anything that encourages reading among children is great.

Thanks for the reply. I use to teach reading, so really happy to hear people share information about the programs in their area.

Rewards are a great motivator for kids, just to get them used to reading and excercising their brains, instead of staring at TV and videogames all the time. Eventually, kids will read for the pleasure of it, but this gets them started.

I think it's a really good idea and I think it would encourage children to read. It is very important for children to start reading at a young age.

I think programs like this are great. In my area the libraries have a lot of summer reading programs. And year round for the younger kids from birth to pre school age they have story time one morning a week. I try to take my daughter as often as I can to this. Another great program is one that Dolly Parton started called Imagination Library. When you sign up for this program they will send your child a book every month until they turn 5. This is a great way to get a good book collection started at a very young age.

I think this is a great idea. It is important to learn to read and it is good to encourage young people to read more. There are a lot of things to attract their attention away from reading. This even gives me some ideas. My girl scout troop could do a reading program, work with our local library and town's summer festival committee in order to coordinate some of the details. I have several scouts who want to earn their Silver Award and Gold Award. This would fit the bill nicely. Talk about a Service Project!!! Thank you so much for sharing this.

yes that is agreat idea i think. Our local library has an incentive program somewhat like that where the kids read books and write a short report on the book that they read and the kids recieve prizes (a mcdonalds free french fry certificate for two books read and so on...)
