We made these today and I just had to share with you. I think they turned out adorable! I included a photo of 3 completed projects. The children that did the project in the photo are 5 years old, 4 years old and 3 years old. I also have two 2 year olds that did the project but I couldn't fit them all in the picture.
This project worked great with all the ages of children. I painted their hands for them, but they told me the colors and they drew on the eye and smile mouth. They also painted the blue water on the bottom

What an adorable art project! You are one very creative person and these children are so fortunate to be in your daycare! Many daycares just warehouse the children and make sure that they are fed/safe/dry. It is honorable that you do so much to encourage their imaginations and artistic abilities! Where were you when my children were small?!

Well I've been in the child care field for 20 years, so I was probably around when your kids were little. Gosh I feel old LOL.

I love 'em! You are so creative! The kids you look after are so lucky they've got you because you enjoy stimulating them mentally. They will definitely have a big advantage over kids who simply get plonked in front of the tv all day, to keep them quiet. And to think that the ages from birth to five are the most crucial in the development of the human brain. Kids at that age are absolute sponges. More power to you, DCP! One activity stimulates several sectors--tactile, visual, counting, colour perception...it's awesome! :-}

Hi daycarepal!
I thought I would just put this in a new response, so you could find it easier. :)
I want to thank you for the inspiration for the craft. Dear Daddy loved it, and thought it was pretty cool! We gave it to him as a belated father's day gift. :)
Please keep these arts and crafts items coming as they keep my kids busy as well as yours!
Thank you again!

Thank you seagoddess! Sydney (my model)loved it more than my other 2 kids. Of course, she's my born artist. My 2 year old, though, had more paint on her tummy than her hands by the time we were done. I'm so glad we took her outside in just a diaper!
I think the kids convinced Dad to wear his fishy shirt tomorrow when we go fishing. Can you think of anything else that would bring better luck?? LOL!

Daycarepal,
I always look forward to your craft projects. My daughter today walked by me, and looked over my shoulder... MOM, Can WE do that?
I think we'll make the fish on one of Dad's t-shirts, and tell him he's got fishing gear. :) Don't you think that will work?
Thanks for keeping me inspired!

Oh yeah! Good thing you reminded me. I better go find my acrylic paints, and get the kids dressed in something they can paint in.

That is a wonderful idea!!! Remember to use fabric paint so it doesn't wash off in the laundry.

You have applied very good imagination I must say to be able to get the class to come out with such creative artwork. The children must have loved the colour effects too. Great job. Keep the creative juices flowing and stimulate the children's minds!
I was looking at the artwork and thinking that if you imprint the hands such that the palm is on top and the fingers below (rather than sideways now), you will get what look like jellyfishes instead of fishes, where the palm is the bell-shaped body of the jellyfish and the fingers are the tentacles. Then the children can draw an animated face on the palm. Maybe you can use this idea in another creative session.

Nice job the entire credit goes to you.You are such a good motivator.I have heard that to tame the little children is more tedious job than maintaining a classroom of grown up children. You dunnit. All the best.

I set all the paint bottles out on the table and then the children would tell me each color that they wanted to use in their project.

My sister is a preschool teacher and I forwarded this to her, I hope you don't mind. I taught preschool myself for many years and loved art time. So much fun for me as well as the kids. Did you read the story too? I used to like to do units like that where everything for the week was interconnected.

I don't mind at all, I hope your sister likes the project.
I do weekly themes with the kids and each day we do a project related to the theme. But during the summer months I do theme days instead of theme weeks just to change things up a bit.

That was a very cute project and a very appropriate one for young children. Not only they make something pretty that they will be proud of, but you can practice the names of the colors with them and the numbers - of the fingers - and even talk a bit about fish - where they live , locomotion, etc.
So it's not only fun but a great learning tool. Great work ! :)
I loved the pictures and they should be displayed. NOthing pleases kids more than to see the results of their works displayed :)

Very adorable and imaginative. When I was teaching mommy & me, we made handprint turkeys for Thanksgiving which are really easy to do.
We also made fish by taking plain white paper plates. You cut a triangle piece out of one side and staple or glue it onto the other side. What you have is the shape of a fish with a fishtail on one end and a cut out for a mouth on the other.
Little ones can use stickers to decorate it and older kids can paint their fishes. You can punch a hole in the top and put a string through to make it a mobile.

We've done both of those projects. They are really cute. We did the handprint turkeys as Thanksgiving gifts to the parents.

How old is your nephew? I'm sure he will like this. Have him tell you each color as you paint his hand, this way you are adding a little learning session to the project as well. The kids and I also talked about fish and then one of the little boys told us he had been fishing with his dad. So then it lead to a whole conversation about fishing and riding in a boat.

They are great and what imagination. I have not seen hand paintings like this before and straight away you can imagine them doing something the same but making them into butterflies - 2 hands palm together- fantastic.

Yes we've done the butterflies before. Thanks for the reminder, we haven't done the butterflies in a very long time. I'm gonna have to add that to my list of projects to do.

Hi daycarepal, Only few people like you have the great opportunity to enjoy with children of 2 to 5 years old children. If at all on our beautiful planet something that give real happiness is dealing with children. Our neighbour is doctor and his daughter such a intelligent child, I can not describe it. Our whole family was very happy when she comes to our house. She was only 2.5 years old but her presence in our house make every one of us happy. The way she speaks, how intelligent she answers. Now she is in London. I tell you one example. When his father decided to go to UK for further study, we asked her where is LONDON. Immediately she replied "it is in Chamber" meaning her father's chamber in our place. At once we all laughed. She understood that her answer was wrong. Next day I asked her the same question. Immediately she said it is in U.K. While answering she also added that I got the answer from my grandma. Only lucky people get the opportunity to enjoy with young children. Have a nice day.
