I recently watched a documentary where they traveled to the poorest area of the U.S. which just so happened to be in new york. The people that live in this area had at least a 1 bedroom apartment running water, electricity, a microwave, a telelvision and in most cases even cable. You will not find that in a 3rd world country. And considering the fact that our citizens are getting better eduacated and getting better jobs we are not degrading ourselves and immigrants are willing to do the jobs we refuse to. America is great to not want to live here or at least visit is dumb.

i think it's the money that drives people away from their homeland and into greener pastures, so to speak. there are just plenty of opportunities, there. but i still think there's no place like home.

I agree with the other posts, I think it's more because of economic opportunity. I even heard today from someone who is from the Middle East about how you can do just about anything in the US to make money. She's right, there are a lot of opportunities here compared to many places in the world if you apply yourself and work hard.
But, I fear that the media has created an illusion that our streets are paved in gold, and that's not true. While there are lots of opportunities here, there are a lot of setbacks and competition for those opportunities. This is especially true for direct immigrants who don't speak English and do not want to mix in with the general culture. For those people, it can be difficult here.
