I wholeheartedly agree with 11BIGATOM11 that BMI is not the ultimate measure for health and fitness. However, it provides a reliable indicator of BODY FATNESS for most people and is used to screen for weight categories that may lead to health problems like OBESITY.
There are people with higher BMI's but with strong muscles and less fats, yet they are very healthy.
BMI has its limitations which are
* It may overestimate body fat in athletes and others who have a muscular build.
* It may underestimate body fat in older persons and others who have lost muscle mass.
The standard table for BMI is :
Underweight Below 18.5
Normal 18.5 - 24.9
Overweight 25.0 - 29.9
Obesity 30.0 and Above

My BMI is estimated at 24.5 which suggests that I fall under the normal category.

According to my last check up my BMI was 28 - not healthy at all. I am currently on a weight loss program to lose 35-45 pounds. This should help to reduce my BMI I would think.

How do you find out what it is? I have no idea what mine is. I do know it is very important to be in the right range for your health though.

I had mine done when I went for my physical. I'm not real sure how it is calculated.Something to do with your height and weight. I think if your BMI is below 18.5, your underweight;18.5-24.9-normal;25.0-29.9,overweight and anything above 30-obese. There are also a lot of the "weight" machines that will actually calculate the BMI.

Well my BMI is about 27.
You need to remember that BMI is not the ultimate measure for health and fitness.
Reason is, because this system doesn't discriminate between muscle and fat.
A bodybuilder would be considered overweight with a high BMI. However, bodybuilders dont have any fat and are very fit. While obese people are very fat and have a high BMI.
BMI was developed for people who have large deposits of fat and not the structure of their bodies.
The reason why i have a BMI of 27 for a 6'2.5" frame is, because i work out a lot and have a large muscle mass. However, I am very fit and healthy. I stay away from sugar and eat well.
A BMI of 20-25 was designed for an average body per height. A body that doesn't have to much muscle or fat.
