Newfound Excitement

We've all known for some time that Metallica has been working on an album that's supposed to come out either later this year or very early next year. Well, I'd seen the live videos of the 2 new songs they were performing in recent concerts, but I hadn't heard any news about the album in quite a while.
Well, it seems that all the news is good, because Kirk Hammett described the album as sounding similar to Master of Puppets and the Black album. It's supposed to have a lot of variety and a lot of the songs have a Middle Eastern-ish flair to them (according to Kirk). Also, Rob Trujillo said that the 2 new songs weren't going to be included in the album, or at least, not in the form we've seen them in. I think it was Kirk that said after playing MoP live several times, they were in the mood to make some more epic thrash, so hopefully that'll turn out well. Besides that, it seems like there's a lot less tension in the group and they're back to having a good time (unlike during the recording of St. Anger).
What do you guys think? If you can't already tell, I'm really looking forward to it.

Thanks for the response, Zalvor. I'm not one of those people who is expecting them to release another RtL or MoP, but I have a feeling that this release will definitely be metal (versus arguably "pop-sounding" Load and Reload albums, though I think that description's a little harsh) and I just hope that it'll be a really good, solid album that'll put an end to all the whining about St. Anger (hey, I didn't like it either, but I can still respect 'em for what they did before, and they can always play their older stuff live anyway).

Speaking of guitar tone, one of those interviews I mentioned above said that they weren't de-tuning their guitars like they did in St. Anger. They'll be using standard tuning so it'll probably sound similar in tone to their old stuff.

Sounds like we could have a winnah. I'll keep my ears open for it, but with reserve ;)
I don't think 'Load' & 'Reload' sounded pop-like, though. I'd put 'em more in a "hard rock w/blues influence" category :)

Yeah, I think that's a bit extreme myself, but I've heard the term used quite a few times. I think maybe it's not a reference to pop music as in Britney Spears or that kind of thing, but just a shift towards more mainstream or "pop"-ular appeal. I dunno, I still like those albums alright, but I can't say that I love 'em like their first 5. Hard rock/blues is definitely a better way to describe it.

There are some riffs and other little things that I like, but I just can't like the whole St. Anger album. Usually being kind of raw and rough around the edges doesn't bother me (as I'm a big fan of classic '80s thrash and also NWOBHM), but in St. Anger I guess it just didn't seem that coherent and well put together.
But that being said, I'm still not one of those people who hates anything Metallica did since Justice, 'cause "they sold out." I do like their stuff from the '80s the most, but I understand that they've just wanted to try new things and expand musically, and I respect that.
