when i scanned the discussions in mylot, something caught my eye. an old man was posting a horrible discussion about religion! he posted how christianity and islam will always fail because we make ourselves believe that we are sinners, that jesus christ never really existed, that there's no heaven or hell, that those who have religions are stupid and brainwashed, and so on.. he said he had proof! this infuriates me because i feel really insulted!
what's with this guy, anyway??

He is a person with his own views and ideas about religion, and about the world. Like anyone else, he has his own beliefs that he has come to in whatever way he did so, and decided to share with others.
I don't really have strong feelings on this one, because while it does seem that he is bashing religions, religions bash each other all the time anyway. So it's no better or no worse than the Christians who bash people like him all day long for not being Christian. It's all petty.
I am actually a really religious person myself, and I have very strong spiritual beliefs, but they are also of a nature that does not require me to defend them to others. So while intolerance frustrates me, and fighting among people of different religions upsets me, I don't really feel that it's any stupider than fighting over anything else personal.

*nods* I can see what you are saying, but Christianity as it is standardly taught and practiced where I live does have a lot of focus on the ideas that he is talking about, so it didn't really catch my attention as being wrong. While I am interested in learning about many different religions, it is sometimes hard to separate how a religion is supposed to be and how it is taught, if that makes sense.
I wasn't really trying to defend this user or say that what he is doing is proper, as I do not believe so myself. Essentially I put people like him who proselytize AGAINST religion in the same category of annoying as people who proselytize for specific religions. They're all just annoying people tryiing to force their own views down other people's throats, and I'd usually rather just avoid them unless they are doing something that actually threatens my own rights and freedoms.
You make a good point in the difference between what he is saying socially and culturally vs. just in terms of religion. I hadn't really looked at it from that point of view.

Well, I could respect his own views and ideas, but he is not talking about this, he is banning supposed to be christian/muslim ideas that actually are not. In my christian teachings I have never heard about hell for thoose who don't follow christian faith, and rather I have been told we all are God thanks to Christ, so wheather we believe in this or not, we should conclude it is rather a self confidence boost and not a confidence alienation like he says. I mean, he is not talking about beliefs or opinions, but about social facts, and if you look at christians in society, they are surely proud and self confidence (most of the time more than they should).

He has a right to post his opinions, and you do not have the right to live without being offended. Sorry. *shrug*
What it boils down to, when you simplify it, is this. You're irritated that someone posted an opinion that doesn't coincide with yours, so you run and start a topic to bash the person for his differing opinion.
You can take offense, of course ... although if your beliefs were all that concrete, it wouldn't matter to you what someone else said or did ... you'd be comfortable with your own belief system and leave it at that. Regardless ... you can take personal offense, but you don't have the right to assume others should tiptoe around what might insult or offend you. Hence the reason I said you do not have a right to live without being offended.
If you don't agree with him, fine. If you don't like what he posts, don't enter his discussions. Problem solved.

I agree 100% with you Ciniful.
Another way to look at this ... view what you don't like about this elderly man and learn from it. There are lessons to be learned from everything. This may be one of your lessons you need to learn from.
And then refer back to Ciniful's post.

Thanks for this discussion. I have seen a few discussions that discriminate against people and it makes me upset also. Have you seen how many response those people get? They know which buttons to hit to get many responses and it pushes their money up. Have a look at their ratings, not so good.
One should not judge for one will be judged with the same judgement. Those tipe of people will always be there. Let us who follow a relogion show our tru representation of our religion and live it by setting the example and not speak hatred towards them but love. We will not fall for temtations to judge or hate, we will show love, respect and acceptance to all.
Let us not be bothered too much by these tipe of discussions but rather be focused on the better ones.
Blessings.

Yes, I've read his posts and I think he enjoys pushing buttons more than anything else. He has found a way to grab some attention here on Mylot by going against the grain.
He's not alone though. There are just a few people here who often post things that are almost confrontational. I think perhaps they are either looking for a fight or wanting to start one between other posters.
The best thing to do is just ignore him if he bothers you. This community, by and large, is very nice and people here really do care about each other.

I'm not sure if this is the exact discussion referred to, but here is one of the discussions the original poster here is upset over, from my best guess. The same user starts many along this vein, though I think perhaps calling him out in a seperate discussion breaks mylot rules, and will likely get the original poster of this thread in trouble.

Pity the fool who says there is no God. Satan is sure using him as a tool.
86 % of the people in the US believe in God so I wonder why there is so many haters of God on these websites? The Devil is working very hard and he is the Prince of Liars and he has taken in many people with his lies. The biggest lie of all is that there is NO Devil also there is no God..
These fools will see the judgement day..and i don't think they will like it.we all have sinned and came short of the glory of God..Religion/God with FAITH makes our life on earth more livable..so don't let Satan or one of his followers distract you from your GOAL..making HEAVEN your home ..someday..God Bless YOU

I've read a lot of discussions and articles about anti-Christ or anti-God.. But none of them really convinced me.
It's faith that'll save us. And I have faith in my God.

I have seen this man's discussions many time and I have read a few at first. He is an atheist and that is ok. but he likes to think that he is not religious, but atheism is a religion just as the rest are. He should be prayed for not taken very seriously. When he makes you angry that is his purpose as I see it so I just read some of what he has to say then go on about the rest of myLot.

Atheism is as much a religion as bald is a hair color. Since you're not likely to catch the analogy, I'll elaborate. Athiesm is the complete LACK of religion, religious affiliations or religious beliefs. Atheism means to lack a belief in god or gods. So if bald is not a hair color, because it's lacking hair to begin with .. then atheism is not a religion.
"I contend we are both atheists. When you understand why you reject all other possible gods, you will then understand how I reject yours."

OK, so he's an atheist. He doesn't have to rant on and on about how stupid religious people are. I despise being called stupid because I believe in something and I have faith in my religion. Well - sorry - sometimes, I get carried away and react immediately whenever I feel offended.. I guess I should't have let him get to me, you know?

At the end of the day people like that won't make me change my beliefs. But it works both ways, I've heard of atheists who have been bothered by religious people and I saw a documentary on TV a few weeks ago where a certain religious group went around telling certain people that they would go to hell...it would be a much better world if people could just respect each other's views.

Sounds like he is expressing his opinion, which he has a right to do. We don't have to agree with him, or rise to his bait, since it sounds like he's asking for arguments.

If he's so angry with religion, then he should just keep it to himself. Just as I frown when people preach their religion, I also hate it when people try to disrespect my faith. He shouldn't go on saying we're being stupid and brainwashed because what does he know? I am well aware of my options as a Christian, and I know the ideology behind it. But I made my decision to believe anyway. How dare he say I don't know any better? How can he say that he's the better one? He's the one being stupid here.

i completely agree with you. i mean religions are like guideposts, they have different beliefs and practices but they all basically tell us to worship our God, whoever our God may be. so i don't think it's proper to talk trash about others' religions. i don't think one should impose specific religions on others as well. thanks for the response.

The problem is that he is free to say what he want. One thing he can not have the proof. Jesus has really existed. Even the Islam thinks Jesus existed and there is proof that he existed, I only do not know to find it. I have the same thing in my country with a newspaper. There is often a collum in the newspaper which is saying bad things about christianity. One example, they said there is in one town a chastity police, they are allowed to check if the girls are still virgin. This is a horrible thing to say, it would never happen in my country.

It sounds to me like the devil has really got his claws into this guy and we should ask God to help him. That's the only way he can get past this madness, and only then if he really wants to. Then again, there is a chance he posted that infuriating discussion just to get attention and get under anyone's skin.

religion is part of persons life, whether he/she believes it or not, and should be kept personal. Trouble religion is mixed with society.

I guess so.. That's why we'll never be united when people fight because of religion - unless we keep our mouth shut about what we think about other people's religion.

He is a highly intelligent man with a strong background in history. He has read all of the holy books and has corralated those books with his historical knowledge. He's not athiest. He's a Gnostic. I love his discussions. I don't usually respond because I'm not qualified. There are some that are as knowledgable as he and the debates are worth witnessing. When he talks about religious people being brainwashed, it is only in reference to those who blindly follow what they are taught from birth without questioning. He knows of my beliefs and is respectful of those beliefs. He is only insulting to the feebleminded. I would suggest reading a few more of his discussions so you can see what he is really about.

I don't think you are closed minded, I just think the title set your hair on end. I stumbled across one of his discussions a while ago and I found him very interesting. When you get into the meat of the discussion, you'll realize he isnt' necessarily referring to all people of religious conviction. Although, many people of religious conviction to get insulted.
Good luck reading. Some of his discussions are like reading a college history book. The fun part is when people with the same knowledge level come back at him and the debate begins. The debate is generally civil but it makes me realize just how little I know. LOL

Thank you, cyntrow. You've made me realize something. I guess I'm just that close-minded. And it kind of hit me when you mentioned, "When he talks about religious people being brainwashed, it is only in reference to those who blindly follow what they are taught from birth without questioning."
I think I'm going to read his discussions because you also mentioned, "He is a highly intelligent man with a strong background in history. He has read all of the holy books and has corralated those books with his historical knowledge."
Might be worth a try, right?
Thanks! :)

Thanks. I'll try reading his posts. It's pretty juicy reading debates, too. Especially when intelligent people like him who have a lot of research about religions are gathered around to debate!
