Why do ants never get fractured even if they fall?

Did you ever fall? If yes, did you get fracture with that fall... Have you seen ants on your wall? Did you ever try to experiment, take one of them, hold it lightly with your fingers... raise your hands as high as you can then let go of the ant you are holding and allow it to fall...Have you ever wonder why ants never get fractures even if they fall from high places? With their size... what keeps them alive and walking as if nothing happens... after they fall... Do you know the reason? Can you share it with us?

There bones are too flexible and ants are too tiny to experience fracture or broke bones. Just a mere guessing. Try to have a magnifier and examine them. lols.

Hmmm... youve given me an idea. Next time, maybe tomorrow morning... I'll get magnifier and examine my "specie" hehehe... just visit this discussion again and I'll share to you what I will find out. Thanks for your response. Keep on posting... Have a nice evening.

oh, hey, sorry, for a quite interruption i just want to tell, i am corrected by my son, whoa!!, that there is no such word in biology i think like "specie", and always "species"(singular or plural), and i think specie - for money, i just don't know, want to share it, no offends, thanks, I just want to share it since my son is starting to share it, it is nice to commit mistakes, wait, i am still in search of the ants...!!^^

hmmm.. i guess one reason would be the fact that ants don't have bones to get fractured in the first place.. i guess another reason would be their weight. without the weight to put pressure on their bodies, it would be possible that their bodies are not damaged from high falls.. well, those are just my guesses.. feel free to correct 'em.. c',)

Hmmm... youve got a point in there. Let others add their ideas... but me I have no idea actually. Thanks for your response. Keep on posting... Have a nice evening.

oh.. now that you mentioned exos, yeah.. but i dunno for sure if it actually contributes in protecting the ants from high-fall damages..

Actually, ants do have "bones," so to speak. They have exoskeletons, which are external, rather than internal. You have to have some sort of bones in order to move. Muscles work by reaching across a joint and pulling on the adjacent bone. No matter how much "muscle" you have, you would be like a rag doll without bones. You wouldn't be able to stand, or do much of anything. You'd just flex around uselessly. :S

Some ants are capable of leaping. A particularly notable species is Jerdon's jumping ant, Harpegnathos saltator. This is achieved by synchronized action of the mid and hind pair of legs. Also, ants like those of other insects, have an exoskeleton, meaning their bodies are externally covered in a protective casing, as opposed to the internal skeletal framework of humans and other vertebrates. Sop maybe those are the reasons ants don't get fracturs when they fall.

yeah maybe. But according to study that i just read a while ago... they got strong legs and their weight is too light that the gravity when they fall does not let them hit the ground that bad. Anyway I guess ants are really lucky to have those kinds of luck...lols

I have no idea. Maybe they do get fractures? Maybe they gather up all their strengths after you drop them just to get away from you, and back to a secure place? I have no idea. Maybe they have spiral feathers on their legs to soften their fall

they don't have bones i htink so its impossible, u have to crush there internal organs for them to die

Actually, snakes do have bones, but I still see your point. You could drop a crab off of a building and it would die, so the same thing applies. Like a couple of people have already said, I think ants aren't harmed by falling is because they don't weigh much at all, so for one they don't have the same momentum as a bigger object, and also the air resistance probably cushions their fall a lot.

wow, actually other may say it is actually a nonsense question when first read, but for me wow!, why..hmm, i experimented ants many times even its ant line - putting some blockages on their way, and yeah blowing them away, and i also notice they can get up faster, and okay i will share this with you when you blow the black ant softly, it will stop and it will take them few second or minutes, no just seconds to stand i mean to walk again, i am not so sure with the red ants, but back to your question, hmmm, why not ask an ant!!^^heeh, lol"), maybe since our connectors are bones and we cannot defy the fact that bone is hard and when compared to ant's body it has no bone, and it is just made of the head, thorax, and the abdomen and the present or the one "acting like a bone", is very soft, or i think the hairs of it help too for grasping or steady - stability, haha!!^^, i just don't know i think i better ask the ant, and like lizards they can climb up wall too, they are like spidey - spider man!!^^,..thanks..

Yeah youre right.. there are things yhat we dont actually notice the fact that we thought that they are senseless... but even the smallest thong I think have their own story. We should take into account that all things matter no matter how senseless they seem... Regarding the ants... Lets just fing the answer with the other mylot responder. Thanks for your response. Keep on posting... Have a nice evening.

Ants don't have bones so they can't fracture them. They have an outer skeleton which is quite tough.

I am not sure, their skeleton is on the outside and then I wonder why you would chance hurting such a creature? I know of kids that put them in water and they did not drown either. So they must be a necessary part of the environment. I hope to learn a couple of their secrets myself and will watch and see what others have to say.

i never have such fall ever and never got fractured too but ants r very much different in their body structure, their weight etc.....imagine ur self as a thin and weightless man and then if u fall from any top,do u think u will be harmed????I dont thnk i'll be harmed.

They've probably got no bones and stuff. Ants can survive anything. They can carry something like 30 times their own weight. Or maybe it's 300.....dunno but they're strong tough robust little fellas. Except they stink when you squash them. Have you ever smelt that smell? It's minty and nauseating.

I have no idea but as they don't have bones like we do so they are very mysterious and how they works bet they don't feel a thing when they fall but they do try to climb back up. A very interseting thing to learn abut them ants even if you step on it they still move around.

Well, part of it is weight. Our bones can support our weight, normally, but not if we stress them. An ant's external skeleton can support more than its weight so it isn't injured in that manner. It can be crushed tho - I guess we all know that - and by things it can lift, but only from enough height. The insect's body is well designed to protect it for the underground life most ants have (even if it is in a seed or nut like some of the smallest manage.)

ok Lucky, I responded to your post because I was curious as to why ants don't get hurt in a fall. And now I find out, that you don't know why either? Well I'd guess its something like the bumblebee who can fly quite well, in spite of what the scientists say. They have done experiments, and because of its weight and proportions, the Bumblebee cannot fly!

what I can think of is they have no bones to fracture and all I do is kill them before they sting the baby.

I am not absolutely sure, but I would say it is down to the ants immense strength in comparison to the size of it's body. They can pull about objects several times the weight and size of their own bodies. They must have tremendous leg muscles to land on if they fall. :-)

Hi there lucky_witch, I study Physics and Chemistry in high school so i think i would be able to answer your question with some level of depth =D 1. According to Galileo, ALL objects fall with the same acceleration, that is gravity and different objects with different weight accelerate at the same rate, 9.8ms^-2 2. Ants have a VERY little mass and therefore have less momentum (momentum = massXvelocity) since their momentum is less, their impact will be much less also. 3. They are very light weight so AIR RESISTANCE has a higher affect on its body than on ours so it will fall slower due to higher friction with air. That is the reason why ants do not get hurt even if you drop them from a height above the ground. Try something similar in size, such as a small metal ball size of an ant, you will see that the metal ball will have a much larger impact upon hitting the ground =D hope this made sense to you all =D

when we were young..our limbs were more stronger too and you get older ..we easily break..ants are designed to take a lot of abuse..that why there are so many of them..they will surivive when man will die rats can do a lot too..they will surivive a five story fall from a buringing building...ship wrecks..even a nuclear exposion..so will a lot of insects..man is the weakest animal on the panet..we will be gone someday..as we won't be able to adopt..but the varmit will still be here

hi,lucky_witch I think because the ant has so light weight , for example, cats also can jump or fall from high places. once on 1977 I saw cat falls before my eyes from a roof of house consists of 3 floors,do you know what's happened, no thing just she run away. so I do think it is the same theory.

I broke my leg when i skated down a slide...I think the reason ants don't get fractures is because they are not heavy, so they float instead of falling..and also, the fact that they can pick up objects that's seven (i think) times their own weight must make them have strong muscles which will probably protect the bones.
