In America we celebrate the 4th of July as our big day..It's the birthday of our Country..Prior to July 4th 1776 we were a British colony but then we rallied, petitioned and fought for our independence and lo we are the United States Of America..
What about you ..what is the special day your country celebrates?
Can you say something about the history of this day?

Here in Uruguay we have two big days: July 18th and August 25th.
Uruguay was part of the Spanish Viceroyalty of River Plate, whose capital city was Buenos Aires. After getting independence from Spain, Uruguay was named the Provincia Oriental (oriental province with respect to Uruguay river) and was part of the United Provinces of River Plate (now you know why my nickname is oriental). The Portuguese neighbours in Brazil invaded the Provincia Oriental and named it Provincia Cisplatina. Exiled "orientales" got help from Buenos Aires and the other provinces and fought for independence from Brazil (in the meanwhile Brazil had got its independence from Portugal in a very comfortable way: the King of Portugal returned to Lisboa after Napoleon's defeat and his son declared independence and crowned himself as Emperor of Brazil). 25th August 1825 an Assembly declared independence from Spain, Portugal, Brazil and any other country and rejoined the Provincia Oriental to the rest of the Provincias Unidas. As Buenos Aires was rather afraid of Montevideo's advantages as a port and wanted to hold its hegemony on the other provinces, as the British Empire didn't like the idea of the River Plate as an internal river of the Provincias Unidas, as Brazil of course didn't like that the Provincia Oriental rejoined its rival neighbour and as the "orientales" themselves didn't like the idea of subordinating to Buenos Aires, there were talks about the Provincia Oriental being a completely independent country. 18th July 1830 was approved the Constitution of the República Oriental del Uruguay and next to Uruguay's new flag were the banners of the Provincias Unidas (now Argentina), Brazil and Great Britain, who were warrants of Uruguay's independence. Since then, we are celebrating both days, as we are not sure which one should be our "big day".

In India we have two big days. One is the independence day on 15th of august.. as we got independence from british on 15th of august of 1947 thanks to our freedom fighters.
Then 26th january is our republic day where India became the republic and we have parade to celebrate in on janpath on India Gate.

Here in India, we celebrate 15th of August as our Independance Day. We were ruled by the British earlier and Indians revolted. Indians first revolted in 1857 (The Mutiny) and continued till we gained independance in 1947. You must have heard of Mahatma Gandhi. He played a crucial role in gaining independance for India. But in the process, India got divided into a predominantly Muslim country (Pakistan) and India. Infact, India and Pakistan are still fighting over the bordering state of Jammu and Kashmir.
