The piece of lyric goes like this "...by the time I got to woodstock, they were ..." . I believe the song is about the crowd at woodstock that year

The song is "Woodstock" written by Joni Mitchell, but performed also by:
Crosby, Stills and Nash, on the album Deja Vu. "Well I came upon a child of God, he was walkin' along the road..and I asked him "where are you goin'" This he told me. "Well I'm goin down to Yasgur's farm, gonna join a rock and roll band, gotta get back to the land and set my soul free."
We are stardust, we are carbon, - caught in the Devil's bargain,
and we got to get ourselve's back to the garden.
Well, then can I walk beside you?, I have come to lose the smog, and I feel to be a cog in something turning. And maybe it's the time of year, or maybe it's the time of man, well I don't know who I am, but life is for learning.
(chorus)
By the time we got to Woodstock, we were half a million strong,
and everywhere was a song and celebration.
And I dreamed I saw the bomber jet-planes riding shotgun in the skies, turning into butterflies above our nation.
(Chorus)
Thie- from memory...so probably a few errors in transcription.
