We recently go a Lab mix from our local humane society. He is seven years old and a big attention seeker. The problem is he has no basic training. We are trying to teach him sit...lay down...etc. He also has a habit of picking up garbage and eating it, draggin you when you walk...sniffing everything in sight....I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to train him...teach him more effectively?

Have you ever watched the dog whisperer. This guy has a good way of teaching people to teach their dogs anything. He will probably say that you need to take your dog on walks, you have to be the pack leader. You have to be firm when you give commands. the dog will know if you are not the leader, and will not listen to you. The main thing is be firm, take them for walks and take the lead. everything else will follow, but the dog must respect you and accept you taking the lead.

No...I have not watched it...but it sounds interesting. We do take him on frequent walks...and we have tried to implement the pack leader mentality with him. We are firm with our commands...especially my boyfriend. So I guess we just have to continue doing what we are doing then...and hope for the best...thanks for your reply...
