With today being the 4th of July, our independence day, I thought I would ask how many of you are really proud to be an American. What about it makes you proud? How do you feel about those who are not? Can you be proud of your country and ashamed of its actions at the same time?
Here's a song that I always play on Independence day that sums up my feelings pretty well. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bh4NlJQhG4E

Well yes I am proud to be an American but I also can be (and am) ashamed of the actions of out country. Especially those actions taken against Native Americans when the white folk decided to take over and robe them of not only their land but their entire culture as well. I'm glad that they didn't totally succeed but it still infuriates me. This is the major thing that I have problems with. The other is how we have treated those of others races - especially black people. And also how we now treat homosexuals. And I mean 'we' as a whole. Because lets face it - more discriminate than not.
But I am proud because I was born and raised here and we have done a lot of great things too. It's our past that I'm not so happy about.
