Don't think I have ever known MyLot so quiet:-(( I've only had a couple of friends' notification emails all night, and normally I have loads! I can only assume it is something to do with American Independance Day - everyone over there is out having fun and celebrating.
And I admit I know nothing about Independance Day - so perhaps someone can tell me. What do people usually do on July 4th? Is it a family get-together day? Do you eat any particular special food for that day? Is it a public holiday all over the States? I know nothing about it - so please enlighten me, and tell me what you did this July 4th.
Thanks in advance.

Hello rosie. Mylot indeed seems eerily quiet but not only today but for quite some time now. I confess that I'm not even active anymore. I have been laying low for weeks already.
Somehow, the fire in me had doused off and I'm not hyped up with the community anymore. I was seriously addicted with mylot before but can't understand the sudden loss of interest. Maybe, I need to rejuvenate myself and hopefully, I will be able to be back with a vengeance again.
We don't celebrate fourth of July either.

Yes I know what you mean. Personaly I think the general loss of interest has to do with the new earnings - they are so low nowadays. I've been off work the past few days, and purposely attempting to post as much as I was over the Christmas persiod (the last time I was off for a few days), just to test it, and my earnings are about a quarter of what they were then for the same amount and quality f posts. It is disheartening.

Yes the 4th of July (independence day)is a national holiday-that was the day we won our freedom from England in 1776.
Lots of people take their vacations about now, cause kids are out of school and summer school starts after the 4th. Normally we go to a barbacue and stuff our faces and drink till we're stupid- but since we had to work the next day my husband and I slept late and watched tv all day.

Hmmm...I know very little about 4th July either but I think to be honest everyone is being a little disheartened by myLot at the moment.
It just seems that there are more "bad users" than "good users" here at the moment and the earnings don't seem all that great anymore.
I, myself, have seemed to have lost my enthusiasm for myLot but there is alot going on round my bit just now. We ahve the freakish weather, the airport attack, cars being controlled exploded nearby and work is busy so that may be playing a big part on it.
I think sometimes it is nicer here though when it is quiet cos it gives you more of a chance to sieve through all the discussions.

Yes...July 4th is a public holiday here to celebrate our independence from....uh...British rule back in 1776...hehhe
Yes, most people have barbeques or picnics...since I'm here in NY around 9 p.m. will be the famous Macy's fireworks display near the Hudson River
As for me just had a quiet day..I had been involved with a discussion the other night about how one likes their steak so I mentioned that I like mine medium rare with sauteed mushrooms and onions and worchestershire sauce---so it got me thinking..yikes when did I last have that....so I went out today..many stores are opened and not closed...got a nice steak, mushrooms, french fries...so gee...you'll never guess what my dinner will be--Want to join me?? I'm sure I'll have to sacrifice some of my steak to my kitties

Mushrooms..eh? Love them...have a great recipe for stuffed mushrooms..I used to be a vegan but believe it or not that's what triggered my blood sugar problem...I don't eat that much meat still though...and now that we're due for a heat wave going to stick to lots of salads--no cooking!! LOL

Yes, it's a public holiday for everyone. We usually go to parties at someones house or a park and eat hot dogs, hamburgers and lots of salads. Some people shoot off fire works all day. Later when it's dark, there will be fireworks in almost every town.
I stayed home because it's cold and raining but I'm thinking about our troops and feeling grateful for being born free...

July 4 is generally a day for families and a picnic lunch and shooting off fireworks. I thought it was neat when I was a kid, but I'm not into it so much anymore for several reasons, some of them political where I'm not so proud of our country, and also I do not like fireworks. They are dangerous and they scare my pets. However, July 4 is generally a fun time for all!

Well, it was raining here too, but we went out to the roomie's folks & had barbeque - well, brisket, and potato salad & coleslaw & a few other sides. We took my mom with us & made her eat shrimp & strawberries. Then we took her back to the manor & they were having a party there too.
Now I'm going to lay down & sleep off all the food - rain makes for a sleepy day, have leftovers to take to my client tomorrow.

Hi, Rosie!
Sorry I didn't see your discussion earlier, I haven't been around much this week. Thanks for your good wishes and prayers for my almost SIL!
I wanted to tell you about the 4th of July in a small town where I lived as a tween and teen in the early 1970's.
At 8:00 am, people started to gather in front of the fire station for the start of the Parade. Lots of folks lined the sidewalk with beach chairs. Others assembled in the parking lot to march in the Parade. Our local high school band would be tuning up, 3 or 4 floats getting last minute finishing touches, and lots of kids with their bikes all done up in red, white and blue. Moms would dress up baby carriages (not strollers, the real thing) with various themes, like first baby in space or Bat-baby, and prizes were given for the best entries afterward.
At 9:00, the town Veterans would lead off, marching at attention in their VFW jackets and ribbons. Then came some limos with the mayor, police chief and other local dignitaries, and a minor beauty queen or two. Next, the marching band led the floats through, with the moms & carriages in between. Finally, all the kids played tail-end Charlie, ringing our bells, tooting our horns, bikes resplendent in tri-color streamers and bunting.
The Parade would end at the beach by about 10:30, and a day of water races and contests, plus tug-of-war, three-legged races, egg relays, and other group competitions followed. The fire company set up barbecue pits, and we'd have a wonderful meal in mid-afternoon.
By 5:00 pm, everyone would help finish cleanup and head home to get ready for the fireworks show done by the fire company of the next little town up the river from ours. It wouldn't be dark until 9:00 pm, but you had to get there early to get a good viewing spot.
I don't know if they still have a 4th of July Parade every year. I hope so, though. It gave me a wonderful sense of what American life was supposed to be about, community and pride, and how grateful we should be to those who had the courage and vision to make that bold and daring Declaration, so many years ago.
(Did anyone mention that the holiday commemorates the signing of the Declaration of Independence? There were many hard cold years of war after it, but this is where it began.)

Thenks for your lovely and very interesting post. And don't worry - I know you have so many other things on your mind at the moment, and it's nice of you to find the time to answer this. I hope things are going well at home, and that your almost SIL is improving daily!

A lot of Americans get together for cookouts, go to the lake, go see fireworks and there are symphony orchestras that play festive patriotic music. I'm actually supposed to be at a cookout right now. But my fiance and daughter both decided to crash out and take a nap. So I'm on MyLot killing time right now until they wake up. I'm starving so they better wake up soon lol. We'll probably go to this cookout and then go see some fireworks later tonight.
