I just read this story on a website. It is a copy of an Associated Press story and I had to share it with all of you. Here it is:
Kansas Shoppers Step Over Dying Woman

WICHITA, Kan. (July 4) - As stabbing victim LaShanda Calloway lay dying on the floor of a convenience store, five shoppers, including one who stopped to take a picture of her with a cell phone, stepped over the woman, police said.
The June 23 situation, captured on the store's surveillance video, got scant news coverage until a columnist for The Wichita Eagle disclosed the existence of the video and its contents Tuesday.
Police have refused to release the video, saying it is part of their investigation.
"It was tragic to watch," police spokesman Gordon Bassham said Tuesday. "The fact that people were more interested in taking a picture with a cell phone and shopping for snacks rather than helping this innocent young woman is, frankly, revolting."
The woman was stabbed during an altercation that was not part of a robbery, Bassham said. It took about two minutes for someone to call 911, he said.
Calloway, 27, died later at a hospital.
Two suspects have been arrested. A 19-year-old woman was charged with first-degree murder. Another suspect who turned himself in had not been charged as of Tuesday, the Sedgwick County prosecutor's office said.
The district attorney's office will have to decide whether any of the shoppers could be charged, Bassham said.
It was uncertain what law, if any, would be applicable. A state statute for failure to render aid refers only to victims of a car accident.
Eagle columnist Mark McCormick told The Associated Press he learned about the video when he called Wichita Police Chief Norman Williams to inquire about a phone call he had received from a reader complaining about a Police Department policy that requires emergency medical personnel to wait until police secure a crime scene before rendering aid. McCormick said Williams then unloaded on him about the shoppers in the stabbing case.
"This is just appalling," Williams told the newspaper. "I could continue shopping and not render aid and then take time out to take a picture? That's crazy. What happened to our respect for life?"

How sad this is that we are that unconcerned for another human life! Also, it is appalling that someone could take a photo on a cell phone like this and yet not call 911 for this poor young lady. I guess we have become so used to these types of vicious attacks on people that we just have no regard for life anymore. It is sad!
Would you have called 911 or just walked over her and went on your way as you were in a hurry to get somewhere? Think about this!

Be thankful of that and hopefully, your local authorities will stop the violence before it gets out of hand.

I don't think there is anything in the world that I would be in such a hurry for that I would leave a dying woman on the floor without calling 911. I can't tell you how sad I am to read this story. This was someone's daughter, someone's friend. I agree that there is too much violence out there, but I cannot imagine even being desensitized enough to step over a dying human being without offering aid. I am the kind of person that still believes that a smile can change someone's day, and God, I think of that woman's last moments in life, watching people go by without helping her, and it just gets me depressed.

I have thought about how if she was concious she must have been thinking just get me some help. It is a sad thing to say about our country but that is just the way most people are. I am like you that a smile can change the day and yet she laid there while people shopped over her.

I don't understand how there could be a choice as to what one should do! Of course I would call 911. It might take me a second to register everything, because the shock of seeing a waoman stabbed would certainly catch me off guard, but if I can register it enough to be rude enough to take a picture of a DYING WOMAN, I'm positive I would be able to call 911.
What are these people thinking?

I know this is one of the saddest things that I have ever read and just the thought that someone would take a photo of her and yet not call for help is just amazing to me. I hope that someday they don't need the same kind of help.

It reflects alot about the state of the human race, I think. How we got this bad..I'll never know. Perhaps it was lack of vigilance? Complacency that things would make themselves better or not questioning our methods of making the world a better place?
I don't know. All I do know is, we're here now and I don't like the world I've inherited from the adults I'm supposed to respect.
I just hope we'll all be able to do something to fix the state of things, somehow.

I don't like the way life has changed in the last 20 years. It seems like people are so different now and so is the way that things are done. I truly believe that society needs a complete overhaul.

people now days are so afraid to get involved when other people get hurt ot something happens, I tink it is so sad that no one stopped to help the poor woman. I know I would have helped her regardless of who she was and where ever it was. there is just to much of this going on in the worls today and it disgusts me.

I agree with you that this is going on way too much now. People need to start helping each other again and learn that others are just as important as they are. Our society needs an overhaul!

I couldn't believe this when I read it! What were those people thinking? Does no one have any compassion for other people anymore? Especially those who are hurt and in need of help? I could not walk away, or walk over her, I would have stopped to try to help and called 911. And who would be sick enough to stop and take a picture of the poor helpless woman lying there dying? I can't believe that, you can stop and take a picture, but not punch in three numbers to call for help! You wouldn't even have to give your name if you were afraid to, just the location and the situation. Some people just amaze me as to how they treat people in need. I bet if they stopped to think, "what if that were me?" they might have acted differently. My mom always taught me to treat people the way that I would expect to be treated, and that is what I do. I could never walk away from someone in need!

I wonder if anyone teaches their children that anymore. It seems as though people only think of themselves anymore. I was taught to treat people the way you wanted to be treated too. I am sad to say that most don't know those words anymore.
I can't imagine someone taking a picture of this. I am so confused as to why they would do that.

There is a general lack of caring in the newer people in our world. That is what is so easy for the terrorist to recruit. We have a good samaritan law. Go figure, we could get in trouble for helping and not helping now. Life has become too impersonal, we participate and do not know our leader of Management here. It is all like that everywhere. Rules and laws and lack or moral compasses. So sad really.
I would have offered help and also barked for someone to call police since I do not have a cell phone!

Hi Carolscash, I hear about things like this and I become speechless. I cant imagine what was going through those peoples minds to just step over a dying woman and not even call 911. I think the person that was taking pictures is just as bad as the person that stabbed her. I mean what is she going to do with the pictures, show them to her friends? Thats sick! I am kind of curious though, where as the cashier or anybody else working in the store? I hope I never get into a position like that and need someone to call for help. Just my two cents, Terry

I think it's horrible. It seems that people are afriad to get involved but knowing me I would be there to call 911 and help that person or any person I just don't have the heart to leave them there. This is so sad thanks for sharing and taking your time to show it.

I agree that most people won't get involved anymore. It is sad, but that is the way we as a society have become. I would have to help too. Thanks for your response.

Hi Carlos its not everyday that we get a chance to save another human life atleast not for us ordinary people who are not doctors and to walk away from that, worst of all take a picture these are some of the situations when i want to scream out loud but then we are so desensitized by watching violent movies and reading about violence all over the world that incidents like these become just that - another incident.. maybe we just dont care anymore...maybe we will are in a kind reverse elvoution where we are just going back to be animals...i just wish people think of others a bit more...just a bit will make so much of a difference....thanks for sharing this..

This is horrible. I'm having a hard time sending this down.
Of course I wouldn't stop to take a picture! I would stay to see what happens next, and would finger my cell phone, convinced someone had already called 911.
Now, this woman didn't die because it took two whole minutes for someone to call for help, but it certainly shows an appalling degree of insensitiveness and disregard for the health, life and welfare of other people. Shocking.

I would never assume that someone else had called and I know that I would not take a picture of it. That is so disgusting! It is shocking and just so hard to believe.
How awful that a young lady had to die like this!

I would have definately called 911! I also would have tried to remember everything I knew about first aid to help her. I can think of a couple of reasons why this could have happened.
1)Maybe the people were afraid of getting sued. I heard stories about people trying to help then getting sued for doing something wrong or not doing something fast enough etc.
2) Either the place they live in has a high crime rate and they see that kind of stuff a lot or tv has just desencatized them.
