Why are people more inconsiderate and rude nowadays?

Is it just me? Or are people more quick to criticize and be rude to each other now than ever before? I feel manners are dying in this country, and I've heard people say that it's because of the increasing stress of society and life in general. Sometimes I don't know if that is true, of if that is an excuse. I mean, kids, don't say please and thank you as much as they used to when I was little. And people in general just seem to be so angry!
I am proud to be an independent and capable female, but I still appreciate it when a man holds a door open for me. I don't understand when women get angry when a man shows chivalry. Is it just me? Do I belong in another century?

It would be easy to say that it is because of stress and maybe that is a factor. Yet, I think that increased rudeness is a by-product of living in a permissive society. It's the risk you run when anything goes! Kids are certainly less mannered because their parents and teachers are less inclined to discipline them. Plus, religious instruction is far more lax than it was 30+ years ago. The parameters of expectation have blurred as our society searches for its non-judgmental ideal. We know where we want to go - freedom of expression and self - but it's a little rocky getting there!
I would encourage you to hold on to your standard for more genteel manners - just don't expect instant reciprocation! Perhaps the people around you will learn from your example. Perhaps they will catch on that one can be open-minded, sophisticated AND polite. Hey, my grandmother used to call me "Victorian" because I didn't get all caught up in the women's lib thing. Now, that's bad - when your GRANDmother calls you old-fashioned! lol. Keep the faith.
