You real name or your myLot name?

Which do you prefer to be known by in myLot? I've seen some discussion where people refer to other members by their real names...which is pretty nice, I think it kind of encourages friendship and closeness between the community here. But I for some reason wouldn't like that for myself, I would prefer to be known as Melody or Mel or some variation of my myLot name, but not my own! Hah!
What about you?

I prefer to stick with my mylot name here. I don't mind sharing certain parts of my life with mylotters or online in general, but I'm really picky about who I reveal my "identity" to online. You just never know...yanno?

It's funny how that works out...because I can pretty much reveal most about myself here, except my name. I guess I'm really picky when it comes to that as well. It's one of the reasons why I dislike eBay actually, because people can see my real name. Heh!

So is your name Istanto? Oh and I know there's no real concern to hide our names, I actually like it when other myLotters post by their real names or go by them, because it's kind of nice. Makes me feel closer to the person. I just don't like it for myself! Lol.

I agree with you I prefer to be known by my screen name for security reasons. The only people who need to know my name are mylot admin so they can pay me and I am happy with that.

Hmm, you know I never thought about the security aspects to not going by a real name. It's sorta true, though I think it would be hard to find someone by just a name and no lastname, but it's definitely better to not take any chances.

i also not prefer to be called directly by my name.. my id sj_chaudhry is short form of my full name..so it is pretty acceptible rather then calling by my first name.... :-)

So lemme guess... sj is your first and second name initials and Chaudhry is your last? Am I right am I right? Hehe! My name is pretty unknown so sometimes I do go by a shorter form of my name in other forums as well.. but never my entire name. Heh!

That's exactly why I don't go by my name! It's very different (my parent's names meshed together) so as a result no one has heard it and everyone gets it wrong so I just prefer another. Hah!

That's awesome, I love incorporating things that are meaningful to me in my online names as well. I love music and am almost always listening to something and am easily inspired by what I hear, so almost all of my online handles have to do with music one way or another. That can be more meaningful that our own names, sometimes!

To each his own.. If someone asks about my real name here, then I'd give it to them. The reason why we have the option to provide a username is because of this, to have something mysterious for others to find out, themselves.
I think the important thing here is, friendship and helping one another. The name doesn't matter that much, just a simple thank would do..

Agreed, our screenames aren't that relevant in the whole scheme of things. I did give it out once when asked, thinking that I could always go back and edit it out but after I posted it I remembered that myLot doesn't have edit options and I freaked out. Haha! It's so silly, though I still had to keep reminding myself that it's not that serious, lol.

As a first rule of surfing the internet, I NEVER use my real name as a username, because I don't want to reveal myself before lots of people I don't know. It's best to be anonymous instead by using a pseudo name like my Mylot name instead of using my real name.

Certainly, it's a good rule to go by while in the internets! Though I find that not many people are out to get anyone here...there are some forums where others try to get people to tell them phone numbers and private information. I don't think I've ever seen that in myLot, but it's true, one never knows.

I prefer to address my friends by real name...if they have made known to me their name. Otherwise, I address them by their log in name.
I myself loved to be addressed by my real name, instead of log in name, which I use for Mylot.
Why do not you not prefer ...to be called by your name? when you yourself have said in the discussion....it looks good to call friends by their ream name....what are your apprehensions? Do not you like your real name?

No it's not that I don't like my name, but I just prefer not to have everyone know it for some reason! The name is made up so I often feel like I'm the onliest one with it, so maybe I'm easy to find because of it...haha! But it isn't a security issue, I just prefer to be known by my online names over my real one. But I can admit that I like knowing other's names, but I don't like others to know mine. Horrible, I know! Lol.
(Off topic, but the baby in your av is absolutely precious!)

I have a few friends that know my real name, I don't really mind actually. I do have one friend that knows my kids & my hubby's names and every once in a while they will add them to a post and I always feel strange. My hubby hates anyone knowing anything about us, he is uber paranoid. I understand why as well. So when I see this person do it, I sometimes feel guilty (thinking my hubby would be mad) and also I feel a little strange that everyone will see it. I just don't know how to go about letting the person know that I would rather them not use their names without sounding rude !!

Aw I understand. I had that happen to me in another forum as well, where a good friend I made there kept referring to me by my real name. While we were on the phone once I just casually mentioned to her that it's better if she called me by name online name since "you never know". Lol. She took it pretty good though, and actually felt extra special that only she can know my name! You should mention it, maybe they'll feel extra special for the privilege as well. :)

I think that sometimes names that you use in forms often can became as familiar and close as any other nickname. I use to go by Stormy when the internet was still young and it was easier to get the handle you wanted. I'm still rather attached to that name and would feel a sense of closeness being called by it on a message board.

I get that. My myLot name comes from one of my favorite songs, so I love it and every time I hear that the line that mentions it, it makes me smile. It's also lengthy enough so it'll never be taken in other sites! Hehe. I used to go by another simpler name (also came from a song) and that one is always taken. I do like vibrantdreams...I've always loved names that sort of describe something. Dreams that are vibrant. Melodies that are rhapsodical.
And welcome to myLot! :)

Hello MelodyRhapsodical,
It doesn't matter to me whether they want to call my real name or my user name. But honestly, I don't prefer my friends here to know my real name unless they really want to be my real friends. I usually refer friends here with their user name (full user name) as I don't know exactly what my friends prefer me to call them. For example, like yours. I prefer to put your full user name, rather than Mel, Melody or Rhapsodical as I don't know which one you will prefer. As you stated here that you prefer to be known as Melody or Mel, next time I will start my respond with that for sure!

Haha, thanks gr8! I only say that I would prefer Mel of Melody since I realize that my screen name is suuuuper long. Lol.
Lemme see...since I don't know your name, I would call you gr8! Or since it's relatively short, I would just say gr8life. Gr8life for the person with the gr8 name ;)

Hello Melody,
I decided to choose that name for you! Hope you are happy with it. By the way, my real name has something to do with the rain. Well, it is up to you to find it. Arghh! Nothing interesting either...
Hmmm... you can call me gr8, gr8life, rain, or almost similar to ryan (but I am a woman huh!) It doesn't matter, friend!

In general, I am like you, I prefer to be known as Mal or Malyck on mylot, because although I am a trusting person, I don't find much need for everybody to know my name.
There are certain mylot friends that I have made that I am more than happy to share my first name with, as I also think it promotes friendship etc, but I don't feel comfortable sharing it with everyone.

I dont really care, but since it is the practice in mylot, it is more convenient to use the mylot name. Ofcourse if you approve a friend, then you may give him/her your real name as you get along, especially in the private message corners.
