I am getting my first Digital SLR camera now and am thinking about the Nikon D40 because of the low price. I'd like to know what others think about the camera. Thanks alot!!!

Nikon makes great cameras. The one drawback I have heard about this model, though, has to do with the lenses. The lenses for this camera are very different from any other Nikon. To keep the weight and cost of the camera down, the focusing motor is in the lens, not the camera. This will not be an issue unless you ever plan to upgrade to a more sophisticated camera. At that point, you would need to purchase all new lenses. One way to avoid this situation is to consider the D80 as a starter camera, or another brand, i.e. Canon, Pentax, etc.

My husband got one not too long ago, and he loves it! The one thing I need to tell you is that besides spending money on the camera, if you are truly serious about photography, you will need to invest more to get a good lens. My husband was not satisfied with the lens that came included with the camera, and ended up going out and buying another lens. Of course, he wasn't expecting a great lens to come with the body for free, but according to him, it was much less than he thought. Hope you like it as much as he does!

after plodding along in the six megapixel camera space for a few years, nikon popped the cork on a succession of 10 megapixel SLRs. the D200, D80 and D40x are all 10.2 megapixel models, but aimed at different useres. the most recent of the trio, the D40x aimed at first time SLR purchasers, is a refresh of the D40, and among other things, bumps the resolution from six to 10.2 megapixels.

I planed to buy a D70s when it was released. Many friends recommaned this model. But I finally give it up since I it is outof my budge, including the lens, and my wife like to use these compact DC, but I do like D70s, I think I will get one or try to have a D80 if you get more money. :)
