It sounds like a mixture of a midwife and a housekeeper-LOL

I witnessed a homebirth in 1972 when I was 18 years old. I helped the midwife. Later, in 1976, my own first pregnancy and planned home birth was such a positive experience, with such a great impact in my life, I knew I found my avocation; my spiritual calling.

Of course! Fathers are expected to come to classes with mom! Fathers have as many pregnancy needs as mothers! Let's not exclude dads, I don't!!!!

Well I was going to ask what a Doula was but as I was looking at the tags I guessed it mean a midwife? Am I right? Helping women give birth must be a amazing experience to have. I actually helped my niece deliver her baby. The doctor made be hold her leg and foot so she could bear down plus I got to tell the doctor when another contraction was abou to peak so he could tell her to push. She had lots of problems she was high risk and bed bound and she was 13 when she had her so I am glad I was there to help lend her support.

A Doula is not a midwife, because some midwives, according to training and state requirements, may provide prenatal care, and well woman care. A Doula, trained as I am, helps women during birthing as well as assisting the midwife, and in this case, I am called a "montrice".

I would love to know what a doula is? I kind of heard about it and maybe with my next child I will have one.

They had brought the word doula to pop culture on Frasier last year when the Charachter Daphne was pregnant. A lot of people think that people who use doula's are into eastern mysticism and or new age ideas. I think doula's have been around since ancient times often as midwives correct?

Yes, you are correct! In fact, the ancient art of belly dance was once a dance performed by women who've had children, for a woman in labor, and through dance, a birthing mother had many Doulas! Belly dance was once a sacred female dance, men were forbidden, it was conducted only in private during labor. Finally, one woman betrayed the dance, and danced for men...developing into "cabaret" style belly dance, which is different from "traditional" belly dance of birthing!

What are some of the most common problems that youn see with new mothers and their baby? Also, what if the mother has another child already? What are your responsibilities then? What kind of training or schooling do you have to go thru in order to be certified?

It's an odd feeling to have others react in a way as if they are ashamed.

Are you allowed into a labour ward in a general hospital to assist doctors with the birth or would the doctors object?

In the community I used to live in, I worked with the midwives birth in a labor ward in a small general hospital in a rural community.

The worst situation I ever had was when a labor and delivery nurse told a mother in alot of pain "If you read the bible, you know this is God's punishment to women!"
