What age did your child learn how to tie his/her shoes? I was thinking about starting to teach my son how but am wondering if it's the right time. My son is 5. Turns 6 in one month. I was hoping that he would know how to tie before Kindergarten but I know that a lot of kids don't even know how to tie their shoes until like 1st or 2nd grade. When did your child learn?

It has more to do with dexterity in the fingers and fine motor skills then age. My oldest was 5 1/2 when we started showing her how and she could do it by the time she turned 6 but not well (they always came undone after a few minutes). But there were kids in her Kindergarten class that tied like an expert. My son is now 5 1/2 (6 in October) and he is no way ready to learn. He is just learning to hold a pencil right and manipulate his toys with ease. My 4yo is like him. They will learn when they are ready.

I think 6 and 7 years is the right time to teach a child to learn to tie his or her shoe. However the right time to learn depends on the child.
