How long do you keep your childrens clothes?

Once your children grow out of their clothes how long do you hang on to them? My daughter is going to be 2 in October and I still have almost all of her clothes. I gave a few of them away to a friend who just had a little girl. But I still have tons of clothes packed away. At first I was wanting to keep them in case we decided to have another one. But her clothes and toys are just taking up so much room in our 3 bedroom apartment. So I think I am going to sell them in a consignment sale this fall so that I can take the money I make and buy her some new fall clothes. And IF we do have another baby I wouldn't want the new baby to be wearing all my daughters hand me downs anyways. Some hand me downs are fine. But I would want the new baby to have a few new clothes.

I kept my oldest's clothes for awhile, but that was because I was pregnant again when she was 6 months old. But I ended up with a boy so then I was saving both boy and girl clothes because I was pregnant again when he was 4 months old and we didn't know what we were having. It was another girl (didn't and still don't have to buy her much, lol). When she was 2 we moved and I got rid of a lot of clothes. I only kept my favorite outfits for both and anything with sentimental value (like my oldest's coming home outfit which was just a pink onsie that was now stained, lol). I was glad I saved what I did because 10 months after we moved we had another little girl. She is 15 months now and the boxes are piling up again and I'm going to be getting rid of a bunch of stuff. Half of what she wears has also been worn by my 2 daughters and the daughter of a friend of mine (she gave me most of the little baby clothes I have) and some of that stuff was worn by her cousin.

My son is now 3 and we have a few of his baby clothes that we have kept, just for sentimental reasons really. Once he has outgrown them we usually take them to a charity shop. I am pregnant again with our second child and I know what you mean about hand me down's as we will be buying all new clothes for the new baby.

I kept our little girl's clothing as long as I could, and finally packed them all away in a big box. Some of her favorites have been passed down to her favorite Cabbage Patch doll. She loves dressing up her own little baby. You should see her pushing that doll around in the stroller. We're so lucky to have a big walking area in our kitchen/living area, so she can keep herself busy for hours. As far as your child's clothing, why not save out a few special items and then consign the rest. Or, sell them on Ebay? That would work too.

I do have a large box of clothes and random items that hold centimental value that I have decided to hold onto. Like the outfit she wore home from the hospital and her first little hat. Things like that I can't stand to part with.

After my son grows out of his clothes, I hold onto them until the appropriate season (if they're summer clothes I hold them till the spring/summer after he's grown out of them, for example) and then sell them on ebay. Not really for profit, just to help other parents out there get good clothes for the season cheap.

I'm like you. I'm not really wanting to make a huge profit off of her clothes. I just want to get them out of my way and help other parents.

My two children have been wearing hand me down clothes given by friends whose children have outgrown them. Most of them are still in very good condition so I do not have to purposely go out to buy new ones for them. I have given away those that my children have outgrown after keeping them for about a year although I do have some clothes that I have still kept.

My eldest daughter is already 5 years old and my youngest is 2. Most of the clothes that my youngest is using is from my eldest daughter. As of now Im still keeping in good care the baby dress of my kids. Because my eldest daughter was able to make use some of my baby dress... imagine that my mom kept it all these years. I prefer to do thes same.

Hi there. As soon as I notice my children dont fit there clothes or they tell me they cant fit them, all small clothing go into a bag we keep in our spare cupboard, for when there cousins come over, or who ever turns up with a children, their parents get given our childrens small clothing and foot wear and they cant say thank you enough...

I don't keep my children's clothes for a long time. When the clothes don't fit him, I will give these clothes to some people who need it. I don't like wasting things. The clothes are still good, but just children always grow up fast, so that they don't suit anymore. If my friends give me their children's clothes, I would be very glad to accept it.

My son is 3 years old now and I still have most of his clothes. I did give some away to my nephew when he was born.. but I kept some that were gifts from my mother. And also, I wouldn't want my sister-in-law to feel that her son is like a charity case. So i limit giving them hand me downs. Also, I thought that if i were to have another baby boy I'd hand them down to him. Now I am expecting another baby.. and we'll see if it's a boy or a girl.. If it's a girl, I'd have to start buying new clothes.. the baby clothes are fine to hand them down. Once they hit 1 year then I'd be needing a whole new wardrobe if it's a girl. :)

My little boy is only 4 months old so he hasn't really grown out of a lot yet. I do plan on keeping everything for a couple years because I'm fairly certain that we're having at least one more kid. And a lot of the clothes that we have are gender neutral. But I'm sure in a few months, I'll get tired of looking at boxes of clothes and sort through them to only keep the ones I really loved. Like you said, a few hand me downs are good but every baby needs their own clothes.

I passed the oldest girls clothes down to her sister. Of course we bought the younger a few new outfits as well, but most were hand me downs. It was sensible to me and neither girl minded. Then after the clothes were out grown, I would have a yard sale. What didn't sell from that I donate. I do the same with toys as well. Except the money from the toys that are sold, the girls get use to buy one big item with.

Usually, I keep them until I could pass them down to a cousin or something. If I don't know anyone who would need them in probably 5 years, I donate them so others can use them.

I passed on all my daughters clothes except for the two that were close together. maybe you could sell them on e-bay or at a yard sale. Unless you are seriously planning on another child in the near future, I would say that its best to pass them on.

I'm still keeping most of my son's clothes from the day he was newly born and up to two years ago. For the clothes he had used before he turned a year old, I kept most of them because they still looked practically new. He grew up so fast that he outgrown them immediately. But for clothes that he had worn, especially house clothes when he turned 3 yrs old, I gave them to people who sometimes knock on our door, asking for food or clothing. I've decided to keep most of his clothes especially the infant clothing. I plan to use them if ever I get to have another child again.
