Let me preface this discussion by saying that it is a bit silly. My fiance and I decided to watch all the original trilogy on the 4th of July, and at some point, I suddenly asked this question. So now I put it to all of the Star Wars fans on myLot.
Who would win in a fight--Darth Vader or Chewbacca?
And of course, give your reasons why. :)

I would think Darth Vader would end up winning.
Jedi knight or not, he did have the training from OB1 Kenobi. I don't know what his actual capabilities are, as Luke himself went through the complete training, but I am unsure if Annakin Skywalker did. (For those who just stumbled on here - Annakin got 'converted' to Darth Vader, & there is a lot of stuff in the past that got him onto that black 'outfit.') I don't know if he can also deflect laser shots like Luke does when they tried to shoot him in Return Of The Jedi. In that case, if at a distance, Chewbacca would probably have the upper hand, unless Darth Vader's suit was made to absorb the laser shots.
I don't know if a Jedi mind can induce mind control on Chewbacca, but if Darth Vader can, it would also give him the upper hand. If that does not work, then the Jedi knight has telekinesis that would also give him the upper hand, & that power was used by Vader, even in combat.
Lastly, the light sabre would also be a major advantage. I'm not sure if Chewbacca can use one.

Although Chewy is my choice in this scenario, you present a very good argument.
And, as an aside, I think that Anakin actually had more training as a Jedi than Luke did. Luke had a short period of time in the swamp with Yoda. Anakin had at least a few years with Obi-Wan, and more time later with the Emperor. He was about 8 or so when Obi-Wan found him, and one would hope he was at least 14 or so when he and Padme got married.

The years of experience also presents yet another advantage. I don't know how much of an advantage or disadvantage Darth Vader would have being that he was mostly machine instead of flesh, but it did present Luke an advantage in that he was able to levitate away, but Darth Vader could not, probably because all that machinery made him too heavy.

Lord Vader will prevail... there is no way brute strength can match the strength of the force (be it light side or dark side)... and Lord Vader being the ultimate force bearer amongst all then Jedi and Siths. Even without his light saber, Vader could easily crush Chewie's neck and fling him around like a doll..
the only way Chewie is gonna win is if Darth Vader is drunk or something.. which would never happen...

True, that would never happen, but it is an amusing mental picture... "Shearch your... *hic*... feelingsh."

Well, Chewie does have the size advantage but Darth Vader has the Jedi skills and the dark side ... I would have to say that I'd need more information - where the fight would be held, if Chewie would be able to use any weapon he wanted and if it was the young Darth Vader or the aged and weathered one. Yeah, I am trying to slink my way out of answering that one lol

If I didn't know better, I would say that you are my friend John, always asking for the variables in my "Who would win" questions... :)
For the sake of argument, let's assume that on Cloud City, when Chewy and Darth were in the same room (only time in the whole series, if I remember correctly), Darth and Chewy actually threw down. No outside involvement from Han, Leia, or anybody else. Only weapons are what they could make into weapons in that room.

that's hard to say.if vader sensed him sneaking up on him, chewy'd be screwed.
if he got the drop on him however,i have no doubt chewy'd tear him to pieces.he did encase his friend in carbonite, after all.

Darth Vader would win. It's not even a contest really.
Chewbacca is big, strong and has the animal instinct, and rage going for him.
Vader on the other hand just oozes the power of the force. He is stronger, faster, more blood thirsty and cruel. He would not hesitate to eradicate an insignificant flea such as a Chewbacca.
Vader has the saber and the saber always wins. It can block lasers and destroy any other weapon. Not to mention Vader could just choke him from a distance, or force push him off a high area, or drown him if there were water.
Where they are fighting makes no difference, Vader would slaughter the wookie in seconds.

One other addition. "Don't understand the dark side of the force." That being said, I think Vader/Anakin was responsible for more Jedi deaths than anyone else.
If he could slaughter groups of jedi...the wookie doesn't seem like such a big deal.
