Many of my friends consider leaving the church... it's not because they would believe in something else, some are atheists but most of them dislike the church only because their friends do! Now what great evil can it possibly be, to be a member of the church? I don't know about the catholic church as I'm a lutheran but there's nothing in the Christian religion that would make me want to leave! The church does a lot of good, why do people leave???

Okay I think I'm misunderstanding what you are saying....You have some friends who are leaving a specific church or they are leaving the religion?
if its a specific church they are leaving, maybe they just arent happy there..I know a few of the elders in my family have lost members of their churches due to changes that unfortunately ended up not being such great changes...I also have some friends who've left their churches because of the same reason oddly enough..
if its the religion they are leaving..well no one religion is suitable for everyone ya know..Ppl change...on many levels and maybe its just that these ppl have come to a turning point in their lives where Christianity just doesnt seem to feel right or fit anymore ya know...OR maybe they had a sudden bad experience that left a sour taste in their mouth OR maybe they just want to take a break and do some soul searching without outside influence getting in the way....There are lots of reasons ppl leave their original religion....Bottomline though, so long as they are happy and strong in their decision I see nothing wrongn with doing that at all..

People leave for lots of reasons. Sometimes they don't like the minister. Sometimes they drift from God and no longer are interested in church, which is very sad.
Sometimes they get angry about something that is happening in the church and leave.
We need to pray for people like that. We need to pray for our churchs and for the pastors/priests, leaders of the church.

I think there are really lots of reasons why people leave the church. I speculate that the following are some reasons why:-
-- boredom
-- sometimes prayers are not answered anyway so why bother?
-- dating someone of a different religion
-- marriage to someone of another religion
-- entire family has converted to a different religion
-- years of weekends spent at church activities haven't yielded any benefits so they have lost faith in the church
-- peers belong to another religion to they join them
-- some religious people in the church were mean or unkind to them so they feel they should not stay with the church
-- no longer believe in God

I agree that one shouldn't leave the church simply because their friends dislike it... but sometimes people simply disagrees with the views, or they just feel that it's not for them. That doesn't mean they think the church is evil, not at all.

in most cases people leave church because they do not yet fully know their faith, their longing for something more definitive. leaving the church is not a good decision, whatever faith one belongs, cause it will only worsen the condition of the person, in his search for meaning, as nobody is catering or shepherding him anymore

I think people leave not out of hatred for the religion, but the church drives people away. Sometimes, people think the church is overstepping, and that it is in their best interest to disassociate themselves with the organization.
