When would you let your children dye their hair?

This is always an interesting thing to discuss. I first had my hair "dyed" when I was 13, but it wasn't a chemical dye, my mum used this hair lightener called "Sun-in" on my hair when we went on holiday to Florida. I have dyed my hair on a regular basis ever since then. At what age did you first dye your hair? At what age would you let your children dye their hair? I'd let my children do their hair at about 14, but not permanent dye until they were about 16 I think. It depends if they wanted a natural colour or not.x

Well my daughter is 10 and has been asking to get her hair highlighted- At 10-- alot of her friends have already started coloring their hair- I keep telling her no- but I thought maybe this year when she is 11- before school starts I'll let her get highlights - we'll see- She also has really curly hair and wants it straightened- so we'll seer!

My daughter is fifteen and she has both highlighted her hair a little bit and has used the natural hair colors as well. I was just the same way when I was her age.
She is truly fascinated by it and now wants to go to school for cosmetology. I think that it's important that children learn to express themselves and this is one way of doing it that isn't self mutilating.
She wanted her belly button pierced, but I said no. I allow her some freedom, but I have to draw the line somewhere.

As much as I realize that hair dye is in no way as strong as it used to be, it is still a strong chemical and I really prefer my kids not to use it at least not on a regular basis. However we sometimes have to give a bit and I allowed my daughter to get streaks when she was 15. It actually looked very nice, but I did talk to her about how harsh those chemicals can be on hair and the need to really weight the end results against the possible future damage.
I"m not completely against it. After all I sometimes colour my hair as well. specially when I feel the need for a change. But I don't do it regularly.

Dying hair has become more popular now than it was when I was younger. We were not allowed to do that and people actually made fun of others that dyed their hair. The closest I came was when I was 13 and got my ears pierced. I used peroxide to clean my ears and ended up with blond streaks by my ears in very jet black hair. Funny to say the least. I think dying your hair too much damages it, so I don't think I'd let my kids do it too often. i have boys, so I don't think I'll have that big of a problem. I do dye to cover my gray now that I am older, but I only do that once every 4 to 6 months.

I used the Pantene version of Sun-In when I was 14. I was terrified of Sun-In because someone had told me that it turned your hair orange but the Pantene version worked really well for me. The first time I really dyed my hair, I had just turned 17. My mom still didn't want me to dye my hair so I did it one day while she was at work and I called her to warn her.
I have a little boy so I'm hoping he won't ever have the urge to dye his hair. If he does though, he can do natural colors when he's 16, or when he gets a job and can pay for it himself. He will not be able to have blue, purple, etc. colors while he's living in my house. Same goes for my little girl, if I ever have one.

I don't have kids so I really don't think it's easy for me to say but at this point if I had kids I would let them dye it anytime they want as long as it wasn't a rainbow lol. I just don't see the problem and I don't see it as that big of a deal so I would say anytime!
