Do you eat in front of the TV?

We don't have a kitchen table. We didn't have the room for one before but now that we do, we still haven't gotten around to getting one. It's sad because we usually end up turning on the TV when we sit down for dinner. We eat together but the TV is on! I want this habit to go away before my son gets old enough to eat what we're eating and eat with us. It's a bad habit! Do you eat in front of the TV?

Growing up my family made it a point that we had to eat around the table together and talk. However now that I live on my own I eat in front of the TV or while I am on the computer. This is how my boyfriend is as well. One time I tried to make a nice meal and eat around the table with him and it was kind of different.

I totally understand! If my husband and I go out to a restaurant it is is different. It's almost like we're both trying to fill in the silence. But the silence only happens when we're eating. My family used to stuff their faces at the dinner table, though we ate together it was always quiet...everyone was eating. My husband's family was always weird because his mom always made the conversation strange by bringing up inappropiate dinner table talk. Maybe that's why we're both so quiet at dinner time. haha

My husband and I do. Or in fromt of the computer. We have a dining room table, but we use one of the chairs for the computer and we're too lazy to move it back to the table, I guess. Plus, my husband eats super fast and I take FOREVER to eat so it's just easier for us to eat sitting in front of the TV so he doesn't have to sit at the table with me. Like you, I plan to change that habit by the time my son is old enough to realize what's going on. Right now he's usually in bed by the time we eat so it's fine. But once he starts eating table food, we're gonna start eating at the table every night when my husband gets home from work.

It's funny how much children get us to get our acts in gear! My husband used to eat really fast and now he is really slow!! It takes him forever to eat a meal no matter how much he likes it!

It is a bad habit- Nope we don't usually- only on pizza night- we usually eat and watch a movie- My sig. other is huge on us eating at the table- It's funny- growing up he and his 2 brothers ate whereever so he wants to be sure the 3 of us eat together at the table- Growing up I ate at the table with my family- now my parents always eat in front of the TV- unless we are over then it's the table.

Mmm...pizza! That's a fun tradition to have. Maybe I can convince my husband to have that as the movie night instead of every night, argh! :)

I rarely eat in front of the television. I don't have a kitchen table either, because there is really no room for it in my apartment. But I can't eat in front of the television because my puppies crowd around me begging for food (they are 5 months). They get very close and I have to continually push them away. So I end up in the computer chair eating. : ) I hope as they get older and I work with them more, better habits will develop and I can become a 'couch potato eater' again.

Ah, I have the same problem with my son that you have with your puppies! haha! He always comes up and begs me for the food that I am eating. If it's something he can eat, we'll usually cut up small bites for him but other than that it's really hard to sit down and have a meal without a table and a toddler crawling around!

I do too, but only when I am alone. I used to eat in my bedroom too... watching tv and eat and then sleep there.... it sound so funny but when I am lazy only. Dont worry, just get a small table and when you have dinner just turn on the tv but you are still sitting at your dinner table. To do this just pretend that you are there but actually you are not. You have to get use to it now and it will be go away soon. It is not a bad habit but only for the kid...

We eat in front of the TV about 25% of the time. It all depends on what we are eating, and what time my husband gets home from work. I know what you mean and agree with you about establishing a habit for your son. I want to work hard to get a dinner routine where we eat close to the same time at night and always at the table with the tv turned off. It is hard in our lifestyle right now, but I need to make it a priority.

At our old apartment, we had a kitchen table, but it was always covered with so much stuff that we would just eat in the living room, basically in front of the TV. (We didn't have cable, though, so we weren't always watching anything on the TV.) At our new apartment, I was really ready to eat at the kitchen table, but so far, that's not happening. The kitchen table has turned into one of my craft areas, and we still eat dinner in front of the TV. We have cable now, and do watch TV while we eat. Somehow, this doesn't bother me too much, because we usually do still have a conversation while we eat and watch TV.

I eat infront of TV, but only snack. From dining room we can see the TV, usually is on but we mute it. My bad habit after the kid sleeping at night, sometimes I'm busy flipping the channel, and while I'm doing that i have some sort of snack with me.

Yeah, we usually have a bowl of ice cream when we watch TV after our son goes to bed. haha! I never really ate ice cream until I met my husband...he loved it, so now it's just a "bad" habit. :)

I think the best place I like to eat is in front of the TV. I also eat in front of the computer too but I try to be very careful because I am so close not to spill anything on it. I don't know if it is a good thing to do or not but I enjoy eating while I watch my favorite programs on the TV. Most of the time I eat in front of the computer when I am watching a movie or something like that.

I love to eat in front of the TV and so does my mum. Unless there is special occasion, we will sit on the dining table. O/wise, eating in front of the TV is really enjoyable. Now, I need to have the tv on so that I can eat. hehehe...

What you don't want to happen in your family is what happens in mine: we just finished having lunch in front of the TV, my wife, my son and I. My son (8 years) sometimes gets so involved with what he's watching that he doesn't take the spoon or the fork to his mouth for a long time and it's necessary to tell him to go on eating every few minutes.

No, we dont eat in front of our tv. Its a unhealthy habit and I want to get rid off. Now we have an almost 2 year old son who is eating the meals together with us. We eat as a normal family, at the dinnertable. We used to have the tv turned on while eating, but our son keeps turning his head towards the screen. He is sitting at small side/head of the table, with the tv behind his back. We wanted to have the tv turned on to listen to the news broadcasts. But now we have the tv turned off, dinnertime is dinnertime again. News can we watch later in the evening, or we search for it on the internet. This ways of doing are giving a lot of peace and rest to the dinnertable. Want to recommand it to everyone. Enjoy your meal! Bon appetit!

yes you should eat at a table. Its the family time together. I'd starve if i had to watch Tv while eating, My family grew up around the table at mealtimes. Each meal is prepared and served at a certain time. Every one knows when each meal will be served. Its like a religious experience. We all Love to sit down together around the family table.
