What are these Points people talk about?

I am slightly confused about points. I have seen folks mention their points going up and down and such, but have no clue what they are referring to. Can someone shed some light on this subject?
I am assuming the number in ( ) to the right of our usernames when we post is how many posts we have written. No where in my account is there any mention of any other number, especially labeled as "points".
On a good note, a surprise in fact, I logged in today to find I made 11 cents yesterday and I have no clue how LOL.
When I logged in yesterday (Friday), I had 79 cents total. I made one post all day, but did read a lot of discussions. I know for a fact that my one post wasn't in any way, shape or form good enough to warrent 11 cents. But, I log in today (Saturday) and I have 11 cents more for a total of 90 cents! And my post total was at 85 at that time. Go figure. I'm happy!

Obviously as the others said... points are probably the number in the () which is basically how many responses you've given. If you respond to a post, the first time you respond your number will go up. If you make a post, something like the first or second response you get to your post will make your number go up once more. When you get to 100 you get the star which is your user rating based on what others are rating your posts and your comments. When you get 500 you can copy and paste. finally!

Ray,
And thank you for your response. More additional great information. I appreciate that. Now I understand what is going on ... just a tad more! ;-)

I wanted to add that the (#) isn't tallied as 1 per post... it also depends on the length of your posts. Plus, starting discussions will add to that number, not just responding. The thing is that I don't believe (#) goes down at all.... only your star rating (myLot reputation) can rise and fall, depending on how others rate your discussions and responses. I had a ten star forever and then started a discussion that was a bit controversial and another one that was a comedic act about 'rednecks' that was offensive to some and my star rating dropped and hasn't gone back up since! Apparently gravity works with your reputation star... let's just say that it goes down a lot faster than it goes up! I don't even let it bother me anymore. I'm honest and respectful so if that doesn't get me + ratings... at least I still have my dignity = )
