Sister going to University of Chicago in September!

My family has never been to Chicago or America so it'll be her first time in the USA. Can anyone living in Chicago give us a feel of life there, and maybe some suggestions like places to eat and shop for necessities, electronics and clothes? She'll be living in a hostel in her four years there so shelter is not a problem, but she's not very good at taking care of herself, so my mum's really worried. Is anyone currently a student in Chicago U? All help and advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance! :)
