Vista or XP?

I am still using Windows XP Pro, and i must say without complaints.
My friend says that i should try Windows Vista because it should be better then XP.
Tomorrow i am gonna buy a new computer, and the store says i can have either XP or Vista installed on the new system.
The computer specs are fully up to date for Vista, but why should i take Vista instead of XP?
I know that in the near future more and more games will use DirectX 10, but since i rather play my games on Playstation or Xbox, i think XP can still satify my needs for at least another year.
What do you people recommend? Vista or XP? And why?

My new computer also has 2 gb. of memory, but that still should be enough for using Vista i guess.
I have read that some people recommend at least 512 mb. ram, but others say that 1 gb. should be the minimum for a Vista system.

Hi there. If you are you have bought a computer with the minimum recommendations for vista yo should be OK. However, there are still a lot of applications that are not yet suited to work on a vista platform.

I would actually recommend XP for right now and wait till the Vista service pack comes out. There are some bugs that Microsoft needs to work out.
However, you aren't afraid of plunging in to Vista, go for it.
Just note, that some games actually perform a little slower in Vista than XP.

The problem is, that Microsoft still patches things in XP, so i guess that it will take a long time before Vista will be "save" enough.
There will always be people that find new problems in old and in new software.
That's the problem with Microsoft i think, they release something new, not knowing or not wanting to know if it is safe to use for people.
After the release of Vista, the scene already found some serious security leaks.
I wonder why Microsoft did not see/find/patch them before they released Vista.
Maybe they need new software engineers. ;)

Hi there thijsthijslb,
I would recommend you take the Windows XP because since Vista is still new to the market, many programs or processes are still not able to be used by Vista, although some are, i find it would be very inconvenient that you could not use some old, but useful programs. My friend has Vista installed on his computer and he has told me that even now, after a month or two, Vista is still relatively unstable after some updates..... So i would say take VISTA on your new computer and ask for the install disk if they give it to you, and then buy XP for your computer for now, and when vista becomes more widely recognized by programs, then use Vista when you format your computer.
But then again, it is your own decision so you can choose what you want, I hope what i said above helped you to decide what you would want to do
Cheers, mini

My recommendation is to stay with XP as there are still too many bugs with Vista. Besides, Vista takes up too much RAM. Service for XP is still available for the next two to three years. So stay with XP if you are already comfortable with it.

I have Vista and XP and XP is so much better than Vista. Vista has given me nothing but trouble since I have gotten it.

Until all the bugs are out of Vista, stick with XP. It will be supported for another two or three years and if you have no problems, wait until all the bugs are out of Vista. That is wait until Xp is no longer supported. By that time, Vista will be okay and maybe will take less resources to run it. That happens in new programs. The first ones need more resources, and as time goes on, they improve it so it takes less.

Hello thijsthijslb. I use xp too and from the problems I've heard about with vista not working with my existing software, I don't think I will be changing that any time soon. You might do some research on vista and the differences between it and xp before you make a decision you may come to regret. I think it's going to depend more on what you do on your computer more than anything else.

XP can take up to 192 MB of RAM just to sit idly, while Vista can take up to 768 MB to do the same. And all you get out of it are looks, nothing more.
Vista was supposed to be built for security. Yet it is still not as tough out-of-the-box as Mac OS or Linux. You still need third-party security software, and there's more of it for XP than for Vista.
Speaking of security, Vista's "content protection" makes it completely incompatible with HD video formats such as Blu-Ray and HD DVD. If you want your computer to be able to do just about everything for the next few years, you'll have a better chance with XP and a bunch of third-party freeware than with Vista.
I am of the understanding that XP Pro should still be getting updates for several more years, while Home Edition might not. I suggest you go with XP Pro, just like you have now. Vista doesn't work with anything yet, and they've been lagging in making that happen. What's new isn't always best. And from a philosophical perspective, "If it's not broke, don't fix it."

I'm still running XP and Ubuntu linux.
As I understand it, Vista still has a lot of problems - and the benefits compared to XP are insignificant. I'd choose XP and upgrade to Vista at a later date if necessary.

I have heard all this about Vista, but we just got a new Dell computer and it has Vista on it. We have had it since Feb and we haven't had any problems with Vista. I have heard a lot of bad things about Vista but so far we haven't experienced any problems.

I think I prefer XP. THe vista on my laptop is behaving funny. I guess, for windows, the normally need time to get user's feedback and get rid of bugs. I have no choice because all new lap tops come with Vista. I think you should use XP until some time later when Vista is more stable.
