What are you promoting? And what's in it for me?

I see countless discussions started here every day that say something like this:
I just joined this site and it's so cool and I need referrals, so join under me here.
Or like this:
You need to join this site, See they paid me and here is proof of payment. So join under me here.
Or even this:
I really need to make some money fast so go over to this website and buy this stuff from me.
You might think it's a good way to gain referrals for your programs or sell your products. Have you ever thought, though, that maybe it's NOT really working?
You have to think like a customer, not a salesman. Customers think of one thing and one thing only:
What will this do for me? They don't care that you want to make some money, and may even decide to look elsewhere for what you're offering because your approach leaves them feeling like only YOUR agenda is important. You need to take the time to BUILD A RELATIONSHIP to close a deal!
To illustrate this, think about where you buy your groceries. You probably shop the same place every week. You may even know some of the cashiers and managers on sight, if not by name. If a new store comes to the neighborhood, you may pay it a visit or two to check it out, but you will more than likely continue shopping at the old place because you have a relationship with the people there. It has nothing to do with prices or selection, but with the people. You feel comfortable there, you know where everything is, and it's your store.
The same holds true with getting people to "buy what you're selling" here on myLot or anywhere else on the Internet. You have to build a relationship, so that people will feel they can trust you and that you have their interests in mind when you tell them about your latest venture. they have to be able to trust your word when you say that something is a good deal. You have to be able to show them that what you have will provide value to them.
If you do, you will find that your referrals and sales will be much more frequent. Try it out and tell me how it goes.

I have to agree with you here. There are so many people who come in here and just through out a link...come sign up under me. I need money so make it for me...blah blah blah. And if you notice, there are no responses to these discussions.
Me, I take a different tact. Everyone on here that I have given a referral link to, I have gotten to know first. Ok 'know' is a realitve term. It's not like we have met. But through discussions I have come to 'recongnize' these people. I certainly am not throwing my links down anyone throat.

I fully agree with you. I only have one thing to say...and it's pretty minor. My only thought is you said to think like a customer and not a salesman. I don't fully agree there...as I think a GOOD salesperson knows how to think like a salesmen but now also how to think like the customer to draw them in.
So basically they can think like a salesman..they just have to be good at it :)

Is that kind of like how ebay has the rating sysytem? People can leave feedback if they had a good experiance or not. I have had a f ew repeat customers because of this I think. So I had a relationship with them.
As for promoting your own sites. I have found a few good ones, and just tell it like it is. I say if it is easy or fun or addictive or if it takes a while to get something but you actually get it. I got quite a few refferals for moola but not many of my other sites.

The only thing I have promoted since I have started on mylot is to try and see things from everyone elses perspective as well as your own. I mainly got involved because of things I seen on here about religion and politics and its mainly what has kept me interested. It sure isnt the money on here...lol. I could work at McDonalds for an hour a week and make more than I have here but I wouldnt have met so many good people.

Badpenny, I have read several of your articles now, from computer and internet safety to traffic exchanges. You always seem to be right on the mark and offer such good advice. With respect to this topic, I personally couldn't agree with you more. Whether I'm looking for a product to buy or a product to sell, my first thought is: what can this product do for me? I don't care if the promoter has made a million bucks or lost a million pounds, can I do the same thing?

MARVEL COMICS, read Captain America #25 and Marvel Comics Civil War and people will think that you know your stuff. (Note: Not a real Marvel representative, buy Marvel Comics of your own free will, there is really nothing in it for you except that you will know more about comics than your idiot friends. :))

You're totally right, these guys sound so bad and it's because they're impatient for earning money. You don't get money like that. In every field of life, you've got be patient and do the right thing to get what you want. Such rash and overly enthusiastic messages have become such a norm and I never sign up for these. I think very few people do. These people just want quick referrals without much hard work and time which is not possible. From my experience, you have to put yourself in the reader's mind, answer the possible questions in your post and be friendly with him. It's hard work like this you've got to do to get somewhere.

Wow, that's quite the long winded discussion here but I can't agree with you more. People need to know what's in it for them. Is it just the possibility of money? And if so can you actually show them that they will indeed make money if they follow a prescribed plan.
Or is it the product or service that they will receive in return for their money and quite possibly their time? Have you got something better than what they can find in the store? If so how are you going to prove it to them.
Possibly if it is a product by giving them samples of the product to try and maybe even let their friends test out. This is part of building a relationship, letting people try something and discussing their opinions about it.
