Yes, the former Black woman born a slave by the name of Harriet Tubman was a non commissioned officer in the Union army because she knew the routes all over the south. Remember she helped slaves to freedom through many of these routes as well.
Did you know she is the only Black woman buried in Arlington National Cemetary? She also was the first Black person and the first woman in general to be buried there as well.
This is something they do not teach in Black history everyday.

Hello The RepublicMenu,
I did not know this about Harriet Tubman. I've been to Arlington, though I'm surprised to admit that the Arlington tour guide failed to mention anything about Ms. Tubman being buried there. However, the tombstone of the first black general buried at Arlington was pointed out. Hmmm, perhaps this is a matter of sexism? Or maybe the tour guide just did not know about Ms. Tubman.
A childhood friend of mine lived in a grand old house in Altamont, NY that was an important stop in the underground railroad. So, although I may have thought I was pretty familiar with Ms. Tubman's biography, I had no idea about the Arlington thing, or that she was commissioned in the US Military.
Thanks for sharing the interesting trivia!
