Hi,
Yes, I created my own website after selling on ebay. I realized I was making more on Ebay than I was with my master's degree working in a hospital. So I started out with Frontpage (a microsoft program) and made a website selling doll clothes and accessories and furniture. Before leaving my work at the children's psych hospital, I had a very strong interest to somehow help the children in the world who had physical disabilities. I thought I'd go home and look up on the internet and see if anyone had made a doll like American Girl but with the various disabilities that children have. All I found were some old cloth dolls and none up to date. So I designed and patented a vinyl high quality doll with prosthestics and some without hair for kids going through chemo. It wasn't until a year or two later that I designed the physical therapy equipment to go with them. It's been the best experience. Certainly this doll would not apply to the majority of children but with the doll clothes, furniture and accessories I also sell, the business has grown so much so that I work 24/7 online. I came here to have a little escape time.
So, you can try selling odds and ends or anything really, on ebay. I stopped with ebay once my website took off but there's a lot of fees involved to keep your website up high in the search engines and paying the web host, the e-commerce "credit card processing" fees, and search engine optimization. It's all worth it to me, and the business has always been a lot of fun. I don't do it alone, my parents are a huge help. My dad does all the accounting and bills and my mom is good at shipping and packing and answering phone calls and such, ordering more items.
If you have an idea and you think it will go, definitely give it a try. There are even web hosts that hardly cost anything per month and of course paypal has a free credit card processing plan if you use their shopping cart and all. Once the business grows you'll want to get away from low cost hosts and free processors because there are always down sides, like the speed of the website loading, or getting jammed with people on the site at the same time and paypal goes down :o
There's a huge world out there on the internet and a lot of people running their business on the net. If I had a brick and mortar store in the smallest state in the country, then I'd be broke. That's what makes the internet easier, you can reach people all over the world.
Hope this helps,
Kristiana
