It's summer time and the heat is unbearable. But with the heat comes Bees and Wasps. Have you noticed this? In the winter time you don't see them. Is it because of the coldness or the fact that not much blooms in the winter time to attract them. I think it has something to do with both. Then summer time comes around and they are everywhere. Here lately I have been doing some yard work and I am about sick of dodging bees and wasps. You see I have 3 beautiful Crepe Myrtle trees in my front yard that are full of blooms. And the bees love them! Then you have all the wasps just flying around for no apparent reason. So it makes it immpossible to pull weeds up underneath them. Now I understand the purpose of the bees. They help pollunate flowers and trees. But what I don't get is the purposes of wasps. I mean what good are they. What do they do to help nature. To me they are just pests that need to go find someone elses yard to live in. Share your thoughts and a few tips on how to deal with them wouldn't hurt either.

Yes, I too have noticed alot od wasps, not too many bees this year. I have always had alot of wasps around my house. I do know that the bees are very important for the pollination of all the crops, flowers & trees. And as far as the wasps are concerned, they say that they too are very important as they feed on flower nector and play and inportant role in pollinatation. The yellow jacket and paper wasp also prey on caterpillers and other larvae that destroy crops.

Wasps are predatory to other insects. For instance, the Encarsia formosa wasps are put to good use in greenhouses where they kill off whitefly infestations against such plants as tomatoes. There may be other purposes for them that I am not aware of. Bees on the other hand have been known throughout the ages to be of great importance to humankind and the planet in general. Bees pollinate fruits and vegetables. Here’s a frightening fact: The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates that about one-third of the human diet is derived from insect-pollinated plants and that the honey bee is responsible for 80 percent of it. Bees are disappearing at alarming rates. At this point, no one knows for certain why this is happening. There are many theories as to the cause. Maybe they are all ending up in your backyard. To learn more about disappearing bees check the links below: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/02/27/business/27bees.html?ex=1330232400&en=3aaa0148837b8977&ei=5088 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MHHF6cbwNwM http://organicprinciple.com/ Albert Einstein once said that if bees disappeared, man would only have four years left to live.

I was just wondering the same thing, about the purpose of wasps, just the other day! I asked my husband, and he looked at me like I grew a 3rd eye or something. He never did answer my question. To kill the wasps, if I can't get to them easily with a fly swatter, I use Hot Shot Wasp Killer, or anything similar. It sprays real far, so you don't have to be standing near the wasp to spray at it. As for bees, I try not to kill the bumblebees. As long as they're not messing with me, I don't have a problem. But the more agressive yellow jackets, and the bees that are black and white, I'll try to kill. Those are the kind that have stung me already. Also, at my mother-in-law's house out in the boonies, she gets these huge hornets. Some of them are as big as hummingbirds!
