picked cell phone in a taxi.

Last two weeks on saturday, after we had a good time playing soccer in the rain. when we were going home i picked a cell phone in a taxi and gave it to one of my team mate, if the owner rings he should give it to him/her and if nobody calls to claim ownership then he should return it to me. last week we met and he didn't tell me a word whether someone has claim ownership or not.
will i be right to ask me about the phone? because after i gave him the phone i noticed that i could have done that. i don't know if he give the phone if the owner calls. share your thought.

I would of asked the taxi driver first if it belonged to him? and whether he knew who was in the taxi last. If not then held on to it or handed it in at the nearest police station or even cell phone place so they could possible locate the owner/

I would have located the serial and model number or make of the phone and first called the taxi to find if anyone was missing a cellphone and have him call you. If someone called you, you would have asked him if he had the serial number or other relevant information. It might be that your friend kept it and if it was a world phone, he could have easily taken out the sims card and used it for himself.

I'm not sure what your concers are regarding the cell phone. If I had found it I would probably have looked in their "phone book" for a number of someone who would know the owner, phone them and ask them to give a message to him/her as to where they could pick up their phone.
I don't know that you have any particular liability about handing a lost phone to someone.
