Comparatively poor people have started a competition with rich people

It has become a trend among common people to show that they are in no way lagging behind the rich; may it be fashion, may it be interior decoration, or travel. But in this competition, they are spending most of their accumulated wealth and facing problems when money is actually needed, e.g. for higher education or quality medical treatment. The concept of 'plain living and high thinking' is gone. This is the age of oneupmanship, showmanship and shameless demonstration of power and wealth.

Hello debiprasad, welcome to mylot. Just entering here, you have posted a nice discussion. I agree with you that it's a trend to everybody to live lavishly, but I am something different with you in connection to competing with rich people. It seems so, actually it's the effect of globalization and a sudden flow of commodity. People overwhelmed to avail such amenities. For example, washing machine, bike, mobile phone are very common now a days. Even today a mediocre family can maintain a car. So in this situation, one cannot say it's a competition with rich. Of course in this way we people wasting our accumulated wealth without caring for the future. We all are running to show a virtual status which has no meaning at all. Thanks.

Yes, it is a trend of ignorance. I have noticed that poor people are very big on spending their money on gadgets and material items in an attempt to either make themselves "feel" less poor or to put on a false appearance to the world that they are better off than they really are. Often times those that are the deepest in debt. do appear to have more in the way of material wealth than those that really are wealthy. I know many that actually rent all their home furnishings at a low weekly cost rather than settle for second hand that is in their price range. While they may keep the items once they have rented them long enough, the final cost paid exceeds the real value by hundreds of dollars. If they miss payments, they lose the items and are left with nothing....all that money wasted and not a thing to show for it.
