Hi parents! Do you have a child who is entering school for the fist time this year? I am a teacher, and would love to offer support and/or suggestions of things that you can do to help your youngster feel more comfortable with this new adventure in life! There are so many different things that you do in preparation for this transition. On idea is to have your child visit his/her classroom before the school year begins. Meeting his/her teacher can also be incredibly beneficial! You can have your child 'write' (with your assistance, of course ;.) a letter to the teacher introducing his/her-self, along with any questions that he/she may have for the teacher. Teachers are often very willing to respond to any questions that students and parents have for him/her. If you have an older sibling who will be attending the same school, he/she can provide a brief tour of the building along with a school administrator or other educational service provider. Also, having a child draw pictures about his/her feelings is also very helpful in becoming better aware of what his/her concerns or fears might be in regards to school. Have your child tell you about the picture. Another suggestion is to make sure that your child knows the alphabet, is able to visually recognize the letters of the alphabet, and knows how to write his/her name. This often helps the child to feel confident in the learning process, and his/her abilities. If you have any questions, please feel free to post to this discussion or send me a message.
