why do children start retorting back in their teens?

Dear friends, I have two sons. One is 21 and the other is 18. With both of them I faced this situation. Until 14-15 years both of them were like good children who used to consider why elders are saying something. But from 15 onwards I observed not only in my children but also in the children of their same age a different behaviour. All of them in that age think and talk as if they know everything in this world and the elders are just a waste. After 20 again I found a change in my elder son that he is again considering the advice of the elders in several issues without retorting. Can anyone tell me why this is so?

Because they think they have their own idea

Thanx to all of you for responding to my topic. As said by Molton, I think when children enter teens we should not stop giving advice but at the same time as experience shows we must also try to avoid discussions on unnecessary topics.

that is an awkward age where they are not kids anymore nor they are grown up. But they chose not to believe they are still to get experience and act like know alls. Hey i did and anybody in that age will do.only thing is we need to pick our battles and deal with them. That will help us mould them to better people.
