Who Has Taken a Self-Defense Course?

I have been thinking about taking a self-defense course, and was wondering if anyone can give me an idea as to how many sessions the typical courses will offer. I am also curious about the general range of cost that I may have to incur in order to learn self-defense techniques. Also, how do you know if the courses are legitimate? (I'm really not looking for a Napoleon Dynamite type of course, if you know what I mean! What was it called, "Rexkwondo?" Can't remember for sure ;.)
