Drug Abuse: What's your view?

I have a mother addicted to nicotine, and a late step-father who used marijuana, nicotine, and heroin regularly. How do you feel about drug abuse? Is it a huge problem or not a big deal? Do you or someone you know use drugs? Has it affected them negatively or positively? How do you encourage them to quit or continue using drugs? Just wanted to know what you thought. Thanks.
