Do you Buy the Extended Service Plans or Extended Warranties?

Ok, so yesterday the agitator in the middle of the washing machine stopped turning. The washing machine spun, filled, and drained...but it did not agitate that is responsible for actually washing the clothes.
I played mechanic and didn't find anything wrong with it.
And when my partner came home, he took a short look at it and said that he couldn't fix it and was just going to buy a new one.
Oh! Ok! Yay! A new washer!!!!
But then I found out that he wanted a front loader.
Call me old fashioned, I am not fond of them and seriously, I don't think a washer has to look pretty. If it washes the clothes, that is what is good for me.
But he didn't like the ones that I picked out that were less expensive because they were "ugly". What? You have got to be kidding me! A washer? Ugly???? Fine!
To make a long story short...we got a washer that was a top loader but was just like a front loader. There is no agitator in the middle to get in the way or break. There are no seals that will have to be replaced like that on a front loader. It was a compromise...and truly...it was more of a compromise on my part because I was happy with a washer that cost 200 bucks! But this one....with tax...cost $1028!!!!
And what gets me even more....he didn't want to pay $99 for a 5 year extended service plan! The service plan that will cover all repairs or even replacement if something should happen.
My partner made the statement...if it breaks in a year, we will just buy another.
OK...you have got to be kidding me!!!! we have seven children and have a hard time making ends meet as it is! And if it breaks in a year, we will just replace it?
*Deep breath Tia*
OK, so my question for you is this....
Do you purchase the extended service plan/warranty?
Why or why not?

I do whenever i can, i even bought one on my camera, because i wasn't going through the damn thing breaking and having to pay an arm and a leg just to buy another or have it looked at.
i don't know why he would want to pay so much more for a 'prettier' damn machine, i would have told him to suck it up and get over his problem, though those washers do a nicer job, you can do the same job with a regular washer if you know what your doing, and why was he complaining about your choice anyway, isn't it YOU who does the damn laundry?
Well, if he likes the new washer so much then maybe he should do his own damn laundry, geesh, wonderful, men....
My hubby was all excited and all that cause i've been cleaning our house like a mad woman every day and it's spotless, then he turns around and takes his socks off in my livingroom AGAIN and then when he showers he leaves his clothes on the bathroom floor, for me to pick up, rather than rounding the corner an inch and dropping them in the hamper, well that was my last straw, this may have been going on for the last few years, but he can make sure his own damn laundry gets to the basket from now on, or his laundry doesn't get done.

Oh man! You go girl!!!! hahahaha
I got to that point too about not picking up his laundry.
He still have an issue from time to time...but then when his pile gets bigger and bigger...he realizes that I am not going to pick it up.
ha ha
BTW...I like the new avatar. :)

I can't believe he didn't buy an extended warranty on such an expensive item and it being only 99 for five years, that was a GREAT deal. I so would have snatched that up in a heart beat.
We don't always buy the extended warranty, but on a lot of them we do. I'd say probably about 85% of the things that we buy that are over say 100 we usually do plop down the money for the extended warranty, you never know what might happen and its better to be covered then be in another huge debt say a year later if something were to happen.

That was my thought too!!!
99 bucks for 5 years? Come on! It is a thousand dollar item!
But hey, I guess that 99 bucks makes a huge difference, right? ha ha
I just hope this does not break down on us within a couple years.
Because you know I will want to say, "I told you so." ha ha

I did buy the extended warranty plan for my digital camera, just in case something were to happen to it. Usually I get the extended warranty on any major appliance or electronic device. If I get a laptop, I will do the same for the laptop since it is an expensive item and something that I would use a lot. I think in some cases it is good and other cases it may not be good but appliances I would definitely get the extended warranty. It is better than buying a whole new appliance. I would have to take your side on this and not your partner.

I purchase them with only certain merchandise. I weigh the price of the item, versa the cost of service plan. Then I decide what to do.

Not normally and it is not needed if you bought a brand name washer. It should as it is built since it is my favorite type of washer last just find for many years. They use less soap too so put your money in a jar and save for the next washer IF it comes to be. You will save on water too. Those washers are great. Sorry it had to cost so much and no warranty I think was needed.

I do purchase extended warranty. Its because I have worked for an electronics company, and I know for a fact that what is covered is a LIMITED manufacturer's warranty. Say for example the product got wet, or was dropped accidentally, even if its just a week old, it will never be replaced free. And another thing, an out of warranty repair costs a lot. for a camcorder for example, warranty is only good for 90 days labor 1 year parts. so if it breaks down after 3 months, the repair cost will be 200+ dollars. if its broken after a year, the repair will be $269 plus shipping.

I love reading your discussions. I know this is a somewhat serious issue but you always make me laugh. But anyway, if the item we are buying is rather on the expensive side, then yes, we will get the extended warranty. In my house its almost a guarantee that the item will break down and need repair. And I think that $99 for a 5 year extended service plan is a good deal.

Absolutely without a doubt, I would purchase one, I purchase one for my Dell laptop and it has paid for itself in one year with all the phone calls and everything that they have done for me, isn't that typical of a man not to buy the extended warranty but yet when it breaks they want the company to fix it, go figure!

I did on our washing machine yes. And it turned out I needed it too so I was thankful for it. And it only cost around $300. So for something that costs that much I would have wanted it too!
Now when it came to our expensive TV he didn't. I don't know why but he said he didn't want it. Go figure.

No those are such a ripoff, when you are ready for them to abide by the warranty they find every excuse not to pay up. If its a car, I would but for stuff like a TV, DVD player those make no sense. I brought a shredder for $40.00 with a rebate, and the sales clerk tried to sell me a rebate. How ridiculous.

The only thing we have that has the extended warranty is our TV. That was our big ticket item. So, we decided to "splurge" and get all the coverage necessary. It has paid off cos' since we bought it 2 years ago, we've had to service it twice. Can't imagine what it would have cost us to get it fixed if we did not have the warranty.

No I don't. I see it as an innovative way for companies to make money and further rip us off.
My take is that if you don't buy the extended warranty and just go for the e.g. standard 1 year warranty, then if it will break, it will break 1 year later.
If you go for say, another 2 more years of extended warranty, then if it breaks, it will break 3 years later.
This is the uncanny law of the universe. It will just happen such that you either use your warranty within the first year, or you won't get to use it till it expires. :P

I do buy extended warranty service plan for big items which I expect will require service often after the warranty period expires. Especially if hte product requires the agent for servicing, it pays to buy extended warranties as it might be difficult to find someone to service the product.

We got the extended warrenty when we bought our bed because if you read the full regular warrenty you will find there are alot of things that can void it, the extended warrenty covered all of those things, for example, if the bed got a stain the warrenty would be void unless we got the extended warrenty.
