Cycling or Running

I like to keep fit, recently I have been cycling more than running due to acquiring a second hand bike, and I feel that I am not as fit as I used to be when I used to go running daily, although I still seem to put the same amount of effort into it as I did running. However, it's easier for me to cover the distance needed to escape the pollution of town on a bike, than it would be running, which I think is the main attraction at the moment. Does anyone else have any thoughts on whether cycling or running is more beneficial as a general fitness activity, and the reasons why?

I like to keep fit too but I can't say I cycle cos I live with my parents and they forbid me from cycling.Maybe it's something Madam Zorra told them.lol.Anyway,I feel I'm not as fit as well.I've been sick for the past 4 days and have been lazing on the sofa bed mylotting when I should be running like a madman to shed some pounds. My dad has just purchased a weight reduction machine. It's my fitness activity till I get off the flu prescription.

If you're getting over flu it's best to rest until you feel 100% again anyway, sounds like you're doing the right thing! What's a weight reduction machine anyway?

i am like yourself, i enjoyed keeping fit with daily activities, but in the last year ive fallen behind drastically, recently i decided to start running, but noticed the same thing, age and fitness where slowing me down, and decided to invest in a bike, now, i go everywhere with it, any excuse i can think of to go out and ride around.... dont know where, dont really care, as long as im out.... this helps keep you fit more so if you have a bike with gears (ive started using the hardest gear all the time) as it helps build you muscles up more so than on easier gears, and like you said, it gets you places at a faster rate! what more do you want??? lol

Yea, sounds good - I guess all exercise is good exercise! Guess I'm in a bit of a dilemma, because the bike's old and needs a couple of new bits, I'm trying to convince myself it's worth upgrading, instead of just going back to running. Thanks for the response!

in the long run, its better to upgrade or buy a new one, on sales, as the money is well worth it, as it gives you more exercise...... plus if its brand new, you know it will be a while before you need to replace or buy new parts! and it has a guarntee lol

I don't really know which is best. My preference is cycling because my knees cannot take the impact from running. I have found that running gets old but when I am riding my bicycle and seems like I am always exploring new places. My car now sits for weeks at a time in the garage. The school that I where I teach is an easy commute from my home by bicycle and the town I live in is small enough that any place I need to go can go on the bicycle.

I go for running. I find it convenient to cycling. We have a walking track in a park in our apartments. We need not go outside on the road.

Well, I've read in Fitness magazine that you get a better range of motion and use more muscle power when running, but if the impact bothers you, you can get just as good of a workout from walking and adding short bursts of speed walking or running. I started cycling again recently myself and am up to doing 5 or so miles 3 times a week. It's much easier on my joints (joints are a weak spot in my family's genes) and you're right - you cover a greater distance. I just find it much more comfortable. But, the same thing goes in cycling - add some bursts of fast pedaling to get extra muscle work out of it.

@ChupoLibro It's true, running uses more (and different) muscles, I've noticed that for sure, and what you say is true - I find rate over time is a more reliable indicator of the quality of the workout than the actual distance covered - 5 miles of really fast constant effort, 10 miles of reasonably constant effort, or 15-20 miles of pacing myself, seem to give the same feeling afterwards!

@Kenaomi: Keep it up, sounds like you have as good a reason as me for cycling, I used to bike to work and saved a fortune each month!

I guess both have a good influence in our health, but cycling much more faster than running, up to your need, depend on the distance and speed. Cycling is very good for your cardio healthiness and also reduce fat. Well that's all from me..
