How to let a friend know that she/he has a Body Odour?

i've got a friend who has strong body odour. i've tried ways to hint it to her by picking up and comparing different brands of deodorant in the mart with her.. but it seemed like she feels that she doesnt need one..
I cant be too direct. i'm afraid that she takes it too personally and somehow gets mad about it.
Hence my question is, how do i make her realise and also to do something about it?

i had a friend like that years ago! but im a more straight forward person and will come out with it clean! ie: mate, your stinking "no offence" but maybe you should use some deodorant!
to my shock, his reply was, whats that???????? :S
so i took him shopping and now its all better, saying that ive not spoken to him in years now!
you can either be direct, or ask yourself, how you would like to be told something as imbarressing as that? straight or hints?
