Last Friday I purchased a Dell 3800 with all the attachments for $2400.....it is a great computer and having the printer, scanner,DVD burner and all that jazz is really nice.....my problem,it came with Windows Vista.....not XP like they said.....I hooked it up last Friday night and within 10 minutes I was on the phone with my ISP and the DELL tech support team.....the dang thing is terrible! It freezes all the time,it tells me I have things on there that I didn't download.....I bought this one because my old one is ready to crash and runs so slow but it is faster than the new one.....my question,do you prefer Vista over XP or not? Why?

Oh Good Grief .. I am in the same predicament, I purchased a new computer, was having problems with my Dell and this one had a nice bigger screen and all the bells and whistles, GEEZ .. it has Windows Vista, I am unsure if it is the Vista that is causing problems but I have shut my computer down at least twice a day, I never did that on my 2 year old Dell computer and then without notice it will just close my browser down and everything is lost ... good thing I have my Dell close by, I just can't believe I went out and bought this new thing. I have to say I like the look of Vista but HATE the undependability of it, XP is at least dependable and will be there, unsure about this thing. I have to ask you, when you are typing does your screen move without you doing it, like up and down?? Mine does and it drives me crazy, can't figure out what to do... grrrr

I know,I loved the bigger screen and the noises it made, just not the performance of it....I keep getting a notice at the start up of my computer telling me that Windows wasn't shut down properly and than I have to scroll to pick the way I want it to restart.....I've been told by many people that it's the Vista, there are even a lot of IPS that don't support Vista and when you call them, they have no idea what you are talking about or how to fis the problem.....I know,my old computer was bought in 2000,it's 7 and works better than the new one.....ITA!I too like the look, just not the performance.....Yes,my screen moves and when I asked Dell about it,they said that wasn't suppose to happen.....they are now looking for a computer for me with the XP,I hope they find one soon

I get attached easily ... I love my new computer for what it is, the touch and the feel of it, but the shutting down is driving me crazy, I am trying to ignore that it bothers me but I know I am going to grow tired of it soon, and the funny thing is, it cost more than my old computer, which was a Dell ... and right now I am so sick of talking to people about what is wrong with my computer, I could just spit ...

Thanks for the information. Now I will know what not to get when I'm in the market for a new computer. I would be sick at having spent so much money and then having that much trouble.

well i've never tried vista, but it's a new operating system so maybe they haven't mastered it! whereas xp has been around for a while, maybe in a couple yrs. vista will be much better! they always say never get a product when it's brand new, b/c we're basically the guinea pigs trying it out!

I have vista and I had some few problems with it at first and still do and they are slow too me. When I first got it I couldn't get online oh I panic. So my son in law's brother came to set it up and got it running so I can now get on but it's slow and has so much updating and I can't seem to download much like the XP's everytime I download it stps in the middle GRR so I give up and not download anything. I prettty much got used to it now and it's not as slow as it was before maybe it's because of the updares. Good Luck with your vista. Oh yeah my computer ic Dell too.

I bought a new computer with Vista, and immediately "upgraded" to XP Pro Corp.
Vista is horrible! While XP will take up to 192 MB of RAM just to sit there idly, Vista will take up to 768!!! And for what, looks? Not worth it.
Vista was built with "security" in mind, yet it's still not as tough as Mac OS, Linux, or BSD. As is, there is more security software available (even for free) for 2000/XP than for any other OS.
And it's still more functional. Vista is not even close to becoming the de facto standard for hardware or software, and some accessories may never be supported at all. Because of Vista's "content protection," Blu-Ray and HD DVD are considered "insecure" protocols and are not supported. A/V enthusiasts won't be happy about this!

havent tried Vista my son in law did the test one and froze his puter up big time so I stuck with my XP. He still has not got that puter running he has my old one. One thing about Dell ya got to get ahold of a tech that knows what he is talking about before you get it fixed keep calling make them fix it. and I know what a big headache you have there.

I haven't had the opportunity to try Vista yet- but i liked XP-- my friend says she prefers XP over Vista-- I hope you are sending that computer back- if they won't take it back or give you a hard time tell them you are gonna call ABC, NBC and CBS news- if that doens't do it then call them. I should have done that whenI bought my gateway years ago- I had problems from the very begining and thn a year after I bought it the hard drive crashed- the warrenty had expired.

I never use Dell unless at work because that's what the company uses. but then again there was no Vista at the time, just XP. and we don't have Vista at home either. there are still problems like spyware etc we have to clean up regularly. too much spyware then it will freeze.

No,they are not the same.....Vista has a nice set up but is way to complicated! With XP it's the push of a button to delete files or defrag or to do anything but with Vista you have to hit more than one button and follow directions to get to where you want to go.....or at least mine is....ITA there,Vista is a lot slower!Cheaper, but more efficient

They should take the computer back and refund your money!
If you can't make it work try to run Ubuntu linux in stead. It's free and very user friendly. You just download it, burn it on a disk an restart your computer.
It then gives you the option to run Ubuntu as a live system (which is very slow and probably just meant for seeing if you like it before actually installing anything) or to install Ubuntu on your computer, either as the only system or as a dual boot system where you choose between Vista and Ubuntu when you turn the computer on.

Don't you think that maybe Vista doesn't work well with DELL?
I don't know but I have also heard and read a lot of bad stuff about vista. It seems it slows all the work rather than being more efficient. I guess it only looks good but not that user-friendly. I guess I might as well stick with XP for the moment, until Vista fixes its problems.
So what did you do next?

Wow! 50+ updates everyday!!
Shucks.. Thanks for telling me, my brother just ordered and wanted to put in Vista. Good thing for this discussion to have come up so that I can reason with him more intelligently. Because he says I'm just being jealous because my pc only contains XP. Whew.
Thanks so much.
You're right, it's not really worth it. Whew. I can' believe that it updates 50 times!

Vista has horrendous compatability issues, which is why I have no intention of installing it until there have been a lot of seriuos improvements.
You should have no problems with hardware since your computer is new, but there are still a lot of software programs that simply will not run under Vista. Nevertheless, if the software came with the system then it should be compatable and thus run without issues. If dell have supplied a system with problems then they should certainly be expected to sort them out.

I use Vista at work on certain computers- I’m not big on it- I have XP on my main computer at work and on my computer at home- I have no problems now with it- but when I first got the computers at work with XP there were a lot of bugs to work out- I think Vista will probably be better at some point- they just need to work out the bugs- It’s too bad that couldn’t do so before they sold them!

If you ordered it with XP then tell them to refund your money or give you the correct OS. I have not used vista yet but keep hearing bad things about it. Will not buy another computer anytime soon if I have to use vista.

windows vista is a resource hogger. stick with windows xp i say. try looking at vista "recommended requirement" and not "minimal requirement" and you will be surprise. "minimal requirement" is a system that enough to start vista, see the desktop and make money for MS.
