piracy

I know there are some people out there who are interested in helping reduce or stamp out piracy. Why do you think piracy is so prevalent? Do you believe the copyright owners are not doing enough to make it easier/more affordable for people to legally purchase copyrighted materials? I think they need to do more...but obviously this might affect their bottom line, so they don't want to do anything that will reduce their profits, and so they end up getting reduced profits anyway, because the pirates continue to do what they do just because they can, and because they have no incentive to do the right thing--not that they should need one...but looking at the situation, it certainly calls for creative solutions. And then there are thousands and thousands of CDs confiscated (think growing piles of garbage--not good for the environment!) by law enforcement, who have to invest time and money into hunting down pirates and attempting to enforce the law. This time and money could be saved if the pirates could be stopped before they start...i.e. an ounce of prevention. Do you think some measure of prevention can ever be conceived of, or put in place? Or will there always be pirates?

Well, for example lets get things here on Brazil.
An average CD costs from R$ 20 to R$ 40... You can get most of them for R$ 5 to R$10 .. and on some places you pay that ammount for 2 or 3 CDs. It's just a very unfair competition. High taxes and the companies not allowing to reduce their own profits are the main reasons. But I also learned from my friends one reason they would buy a pirate cd instead of a original one: The cds are expensive, and they only want a CD cuz of just one or two musics. So they just don't want to pay the price just for one or two musics. They fell like being cheated. Well, I think there are other reasons also.

You're right...sometimes I only like one song on a CD and it's hard to pay the full price for just that...but that's where those online sites for legal purchase of music like itunes etc are supposed to come in, and fill the gap...unfortunately some have country restrictions, or even restrictions on the file like you can only transfer it for a limited number of times etc...they are really not yet consumer-friendly with these online music catalog, although the concept would actually work well, if they can actually think it through and do more to uphold consumer rights instead of just thinking about their "bottomline" as usual.

Yeah. Here they made some boxes that you can choose the musics you want and burn a CD with that. You still pay the full price, but at least the cd has only musics you want. Which is very good. But these are very rare yet. Hope they make more of there, because I know there are lots of ppl who don't like to cheat, and they would be really happy with this solution.
