Why do dogs and cats hate each other?

Dogs and cats are the two top house pets we have ever domesticated. But instead of loving and cooperating with each other, they are always in war and could not be near with each other. Granted, we usually see some exemptions happening from time to time but generally dogs and cats really hate each other.
Why do you think this is so? Are they competing for the master's love and attention?

actually if they grow together they will not be fighting. but if you bring them both home and they are adults of course they will end up fighting. that applies also for cats if they are both adults and you joined them in a house they will be quarelling also and so as dogs

Most generally if they're raised together, they'll get along fine. I have dogs and cats together, and they will sleep together, eat together, and play together. The main problem is that the dogs hog down the majority of what they're eating. I keep down automatic feeders, and that way, everybody gets plenty of their dog and cat food. Unfortunately, the dogs to eat the cat food, so I have to buy extra cat food, but they're all pretty happy for the most part.

No, it's simple. Dog wants to play. cat thinks it's being attacked!
My neighbor has a big pit bull that has his own cat. My dogs want to chase and play with this cat that has no fear of dogs. It sits on the other side of the fence and watches my dogs go crazy. The cat is teasing my dogs!!!

I don't think it's a mater of hating each other. I think is all in how they are introduced to each other. We have had several cats and dogs that got along fine over the years. They even play with each other. Right now there are 5 dogs and one cat that were all adults when they were introduced to each other. The cat was afraid at first, but now she knows that the dogs don't wnat to hurt her they just want to play. I've even seen her go up to them and start the play time.

The basis for their problems getting along are that they have different body languages. When a dog raises a paw, he wants to be friends. When a cat raises its paw, it is warning you off or he will scratch you. So many of their signals mean different things entirely. So unless they have been raised together since they were babies, they will be slow to learn each other's language and slow to learn to play nice together. The other major factor is whether the owner is clearly pack leader. If he is, then the dog will understand that both he and the cat are there at the owner's behest. If the dog thinks he is pack leader and has to defend turf against intruders, the more likely he is to try to chase the cat away.

I think this is the creation of God that we could never understand. But if I look it in the scope of science, I think there is a hormone produced by each animals which make them hate each other. Maybe their instinct tells that the opposite animal will give threat to them, so they hate each other.

I think it's just the natural thing for dogs to enjoy chasing something that runs --not that they hate each other. I've had two different dogs and three different cats in my lifetime and the dogs and cats just ignored each other completely.

i think it depends on how the dogs are raised. I've had dogs and cats together a few times, and while it was a rocky start, they eventually got along quite well. I even had a dog and cat that worked together as a team. the cat would stand up on his back legs and take stuff out of the garbage and drop it down for him and the dog to share together.
