I have a six year old Gateway that runs XP. My new computer will have Vista. Will I be able to connect them by a LAN or do they need the same OS?
Also, can you connect two desktops with crossover cables from the network cards or is a router needed?
Thanks in advance!

A crossover cable should work perfectly well, but I noticed in another post of your's that you are using a router which is the easier method.
You can create a LAN comprising of any combination of operating systems, so using 2 Windows versions will present no obstacle.

you dont need to have the same O.S. to communicate the two PC. All you have to do is set up the proper network configuration (TCP/IP). Assign IP addresses each for every PC. But should have the same subnet and gateway.
Sample
PC#1 IP address :192.168.0.2 subnet: 255.255.255.0 gateway:(ip address of PC connected to the Internet) 192.168.0.2
PC#2 IP address :192.168.0.3 subnet: 255.255.255.0 gateway: 192.168.0.2

Thank you very much for your response! I will have a try by using your method.
Because when I use two XP PCs to connect to each other, I didn't assign IP address and they work. But for Vista and XP, they just couldn't communicate with each other using the same method.
Again thank for your answer dude!
