If I put LOL into a response that I make then I generally have found the original post to be funny and it made me laugh. I also use it a lot in discussions that I start simply because there are more than a few very serious minded people here at mylot and they take everything I say seriously no matter how ridiculous it is (which is most of the time)...I'll put in LOL o let people know that I am joking.

Sometimes. It really depends, it's become one of those chat tools that you use to show that you are listening, a type of listening device that shows that you understood the statement made by someone else or recognize the humor. I will admit there are still times that someone says something to me that is super funny, but I think it's more used like a nervous laugh than a genuine show of amusement.

I definitely use my fair share of emoticons, too. the problem is, i would rather take the strokes of "LOL" rather than the strokes for :-) because it needs more keystrokes. Call me lazy, but it helps the flow of my typing better... either that, or I can do a "hahaha"

LOL--- I'm laughing at this discussion- too cute- I think it's more of a saying- ha ha-- I think lol sounds better than ha ha or hee hee- don't you? But sometimes when I find something really funny and I am laughing I use LOL also-

Hi Kris... thanks if you think this topic is cute and you are amused (i am smiling). Well, everyone has his/her own preferences on what to use as a sign language in chat or other online forum. I was just wondering coz I often read LOL and just thinking if the person really laugh out loud when he/she use/type LOL in chat or discussion. I see other shortened words in chat, and I must admit I sometimes don't know the meaning of those shortened expressions.

I usually don't use these short forms. When I really feel like laughing I literally express my laughter as haha hehe!People are using these as their regular words in chat and they use it for conversations in which there is no place for laughter..

I use "lol" a lot! More than I should most of the time. Sometimes I am laughing out loud when I post that. Sometimes I'm not. But when I do write that, I'm always truthful in meaning that I think it's funny.

ok say you are watching someone on their cams in a chat program and they type LOL they are normally laughing.. But than again some people just smile and type it too so they really are not laughing how ever you did make the person smile.. For me though when i use LOL i am usually laughing cause sometime people tend the say the funniest stuff, though when they don't I tend to roll my eyes and wonder..

Good Question! I use the expression a lot! Most times I use it I am actually laughing out loud although occasionally it is to stress my meaning! Some people might think that I can't possibly be laughing out loud as much as I write it but in all honesty I do - I am the type of person who laughs easily and cries just as easy - I love life and I love to be animated and actually feel emotions! xxx

Ok, its good for you mummymo to really easily laugh loudly.
I can only smile or show expression of funny face when I read or hear something funny. So I very seldom use lol. I rather use hahaha, hehehe or would rather use the laughing emoticon or the smiling emoticon, or any emoticon that is appropriate to what really I feel.
Anyway, thanks for sharing.

It is not necessary me for laughing Out loud when I write the LOL in chat. It does also means to tell some one that he or she should laugh out loud after reading the sentence used in chatting practice.

I hate it! I don't use it as I find it really stupid and I don't believe for a second the person is laughing. I also hate all shortened English. It is a great language and I wish people would stop butchering it with stupid shortcuts, if you are too lazy to type maybe you should find a different past time!

Yes, there are many shortened words in chatting that are used or written and I hate to admit that I don't know the meaning of some of those abbreviations!
I understand how you feel whywiki... and I respect your opinion. But I think we should also respect others on their preferences.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts here.

I have to admit, I'm a total 'lol' addict - I tend to use it just to fill in the blanks in any conversations, more than me actually laughing. Also, if my friends say something that's slightly odd, or something that makes me feel a little awkward, then I tend to LOL at it. I have tried to stop, though, coz I find it annoying when people do the same thing to me!

IMHO, If there is an emoticon like those used in YM here in mylot then I'll definitely use that to convey that I'm LOL or ROFL. For me typing the signs is not enough to show your expression to a particular opinion or even hahaha, hehehe, bwahahaha, ahihihih. I could be jolly at times, so much that even a slight hint of joking around,an amusing word/ sentence, agreeing with a person then I'll use LOL,whether or not I'm laughing out loud. In my head actually yes I do. Now many would or could not understand why many use LOL more than others would. IMHO again, I guess we have a varying and different level of being amused to being ridiculously and hilariously amused. LOL :D

I think it's just become a trite meaning, an everyday use that people just use without batting an eyelid, it's become expected and accepted and probably ignored and the true meaning has gone out of the window, I certainly don't laugh out loud when I type it, I try to be aware of when I am using it or if am I using it too much. Mind you a lot of these smilies are occuring a lot too! Like ;0) and :0**(

Of course,it truly is..When I type LOL,I laugh in reality.About this,my friend laughs at me more times. He thinks that is just like a fool. But i can't get out of the habit.I often howl,'Let me be.'And then he says nothing and keeps silent a while.

Yeah, I chuckle quite often when I read someones discussion. I just read one about women buying a husband. It was a joke, but it was so cute I couldn't help but laugh. I like this site so much because of this. There is a lot of humour here and I enjoy that. I was on another forum before I became a member here and it was too serious for me. That is why I was looking for something else, and came across this site. I am so glad I did.
