Starting a New Life

I am at a crossroads in my life right now, after some changes of circumstances within my family - currently I am living in England, but I want to move to the USA to start a new life, and I was wondering if anyone else has done this, and would like to share their experiences. In particular, how difficult is it to find work in the USA, did you manage to find a job before travelling, or is it best to go over first, and then apply for a job and work permit once you are in the area you want to live at? How receptive were prospective employers of your application, and were they willing to help you apply for a work permit/visa, and how long did the process take you? Did you manage to find skilled/qualified work, or did you apply for the first vacancies you saw to get your foot into the door? Or are you a US employer, that has experience of taking on new arrivals to your country? I know it's likely to take some time, but as soon as I build up some cash I intend to travel there and start my new life, and I don't intend to look back, so any responses will be very helpful.
