I took my dad for his quarterly heart check up Wed afternoon. Everything appears to be goping well for him. Heart rate was steady and normal. Blood pressure normal as well. He saw a Doctors Assistant. When did that title come around. I meant to ask her a ton of questions about that title but forgot. Anyhow it seems they or at least she was, a true friend of the pharmacuetical compnay representatives. All she wanted to do was give my father 4 more prescriptions added to the 8 he already has now. She suggested cholesterol pills even though the heart surgeon didn't suggest it nor did his family Dr. They said his level of both were normal and needed no attention. Then she also wanted to add a coupel more beta blockers which he is taking already. I am sorry to tell her but I refused every one stating if he's doing so well why she wants him on more pills. She said as a precautionary step. Well it's been 6 months since he has had anything wrong & everything is going uphill as far as his health. Why change or add things now that seem senseless especially since 3 other Dr.s never suggested this. Anyhow I'm done rambling on. Dad is doing GREAT as of late other than being lazy & not getting any exercise. Thanks. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

I am so glad your dad is doing well..I don't understand why she would want to put him on more meds if he is doing well..It doesn't sound right to me and I am glad you made a decision to not accept..Doctor's assistants are okay but I want a real doctor when it comes to meds...take care

You have to be careful with those meds. My mom was on a cholestrol med that made her very sick, Lipitor. It was a while before we figured out what it was. The doctors were no help. Finally my cousin who had the same reaction to Lipitor suggested it. I got on line and looked it up and sure enough that was the problem. Then they put her on some heart meds, metrapropolol (may not be spelling it right) and it slowed her heart down to much and she collapsed. Had to be rushed to the hospital. Then they put her on Lexapro which she shouldn't have taken cause she is bipolar. It sent her into a manic phase. My Mom has quit taking all her meds now (including the ones she does need) and I think its because of all these doctors overprescribing. Something has got to be done about these irresponsible health care professionals.

Glad to hear dad's doing great, Grandpa Bob. Makes me wonder myself if he's doing so great then why all the friggin' meds. Think the nurse just wants the pharmacies to sponge more money outta your dad. I remember when my Grandma was still alive. She was on over 12 different meds and they wondered why she was doing so poorly. When she had to switch drs., the new one looked over her records carefully and then took her off ALL meds for a week then put her on 3 new ones and that's all she needed till she was found in eternal sleep in her wheelchair. She actually improved alot in health after she was taken off all her meds.

Great news that Dad is doing so well. I know it is hard to see him just lay around all day. Some times I feel if he wants to lay around let him he has worked hard and lived his life, then again I feel if he got some exercise he would feel better. What do you do. I also agree with you on not adding more medications to your dads others I believe leave well enough alone.

He asked me to stick one of his bills in the mailbopx today. I said why it doesn't come till tomorrow morning. So he says, WHATEVER! Then a few minutes later I heard my front screen door. He got a little walk in today. Its about 150 total of a walk there and back. I sat watching to make sure he didn't fall as he is so weak from not walking lately. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

Hi webeishere! Huh, that's bad for the doctor's assistant who is suggesting a lot of medicines for your father. It's good that you did not get it. Hope that your father will get better and better everyday.

How strange! I guess she hasn't heard the saying "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". I agree that she must be a friend of the pharmaceutical co. rep. Why else would she want to push meds that he doesn't need. Geez, I can't get a doctor to help me and he gets a doc that wants to over medicate him. What's wrong with the world today?!?

I have seen some very good PA's ( Physician's Assistants) and some great ARNP's (Advanced registered Nurse Practioners) They are both allowed some scope in seeing patients and assisting the doctor in routine instances. Both can prescribe, I believe. I even saw a female PA talk a nursing home resident into some preventative tests that she has refused for years. That is for the good ones. I have also heard of them being fast on the trigger feeling on meds, and I have know of them prescribing things that are not needed. I think you did well to use your head and not mess with success.

Im glad to hear your dad is doing great. I know what you mean about doctors.LOL Sometimes I wonder if they are doctors or just pill pushers.heheheh No seriously they do prescribe too much medication. As for me I hate taking anything.

Hi Grandpa Bob, A Dr.'s assistant? I've never heard of 'them' in our part of the world. I wonder If they're 'the wave of the future,' and how much medical training they have? Let us know if you find out. I'm glad to hear your dad's doing so well. It doesn't make sense that he should be on even more medication, so it's wonderful that you took a stand for him. Have a great day!:)

Good to hear your Dad is doing good. I do not understand all these meds sometimes. My doc put me on meds, then I have to go back to make sure the meds aren't messing up my liver. What's that all about. i never had liver or kidney problems. Why would I want to take meds that possibly give me more problems ?? Just doesn't make any sense to me. Good for you standing up to her and telling her no way. Why put someone on meds for something that isn't even wrong with them? That makes absolutely no sense what so ever.

I am so glad that your Dad is doing so well...I have seen these "pill pushers"...they can e found in almost every aspect of the medical field....LOL A physician's assistant is or has received alot of the same training as the primary physician but is working under the primary doctor's licensure to a large extent...they are expected to have the primary physician "look over" and approve all of their work with every case....this position was created because of the overlaod of patients that most physicians take on.... Being lazy and not getting any exercise is a common problem...but he probably feels that he has earned that right...LOL

I don't blame you. I would also qustion here about why she thinks he needs more pills. Next time you go to the family doc ask him if he sees a reason for the other pills. The chelostoral, well sometimes it may be high but the person not hive high chelestoral. Like if he had ate alot of foods that day that might raise it. Most docs would have him come back so they could recheck it before prescribing pills for it. Anyhow, great to hear that he is doing good!

You've hit the nail on the head when you mention the relationship between doctors and pharmaceutical companies. In Australia, the reps take or shout the doctors to lunch. It used to be free pens and notepads, how long before the bribes are weekends away or island holidays?

Hi Grandpa! This is really a Good News to hear about your Dad. Thanks God. Well, I would like to add here that you are right why one should add-on the medicine by itself without the advice of the consultant. Your Dad, being in 80s cannot afford to take on the medicine whilst having the regular course of medicine already, as advised by his surgeon. No need to take at all. Yes, if the Doctor / Surgeon changes and advise to take precautionery medicine, then its okay. Thanks and have a good day with "Healthy Dad" :)
