Does asking for money work

I see people posting on here and other places begging for help. Most are going to be evicted, expelled, have a surgery, or lost their job. All are asking for money. Now I'm not saying I don't feel bad but if you are looking for money aren't there higher rates of success you could spend your time looking for free money than doing it online? If their are people out there giving out money please put me on your list I have been saving money for years and don't have enough to have what I need. I just don't understand it, is online actually some peoples last resort or are they looking for a lucky hand out?
