Fiction OR Non-fiction

I love to read books and I love to go to the bookstore, especially those who caters for a hard-to-find books. However, I really cannot find myself interested in fictional books.
For instance, I have acquired for myself before it became a real hit Dan Brown's bestseller book "The Da Vinci Code", but it was only a waste (hope not so) for me because I never finish reading it, not even a-third of it. I just watched the movie and never get back on reading the same. I can't really appreciate going on it but I do have read many books in reference to its non-fiction aspect...and finished all of them.
How about you? Please share with me your personal opinion on this.

I tend to like both but it has to be a really good book. I like books that are so interesting I do not want to put them down.
I just finished Khaled Hosseini's new book, A Thousand Splendid Suns and wrote a review on it here:

I liked both of this author's books because it sounded like he wrote them about people he knew.
There are great fiction books out there, and I tend to stick with authors I have been refered to by other readers who have told me about great books before.

That's funny, I also wrote a review of "A Thousand Splendid Suns" on Gather, which you can find here:

This was a great book, and I loved "The Kite Runner" too. I only wish he had written more books. What other novels do you like?

I just commented on your gather article.
I liked Ginger Garrett's book Dark Hour and the one before that.I also have another author that I just read three of her books back to back, before Hosseini's books.
Have to go look up her name because it was a few months ago.

I prefer Non-Fiction over Fiction. I really enjoy books by Jodi Picoult. Her most recent book, Nineteen Minutes, though Fictional is based upon School Shootings. So it's based upon a Non-Fictional subject though it is a Fictional Story. She also has a book about an Amish teenager getting pregnant, something that Amish teenagers should not be doing. A book about A child who sues her parents because she wants the rights to her own body. This story is about Stem Cell Research... another Fictional Story based on Fact.
I do like Non-Fiction as well, but usually only "True-Crime" type things. I get "lost in books" easier if it's not real though.

I suppose. I also like Harry Potter though, obviously strictly fiction. I just finished reading the first book by Joe Hill (Stephen King's son) and that was also Fiction. I guess I'd say I more like Fiction though I do like a little of the non-fiction presented in it. However, things like the Da Vinci code do not interest me whatsoever.

Well, I think to draw the line clearly in your case you really opt to read fictional literature rather that non-fiction.

So your favorite are fictional stories with factual basis. Just like the one I mentioned above the Da Vinci Code. Very provocative.

I read both types of books. In fact, right now, I am reading one of each: nonfiction = "Reading Like a Writer" by Francine Prose and fiction = "Back When We Were Grownups" by Anne Tyler (she is the author of "Accidental Tourist"). Most of the time, I just split the reading up. It's easier to read fiction, but nonfiction probably has longer lasting rewards. I tend to read about politics and travel when I read nonfiction. For fiction, I like contemporary literary writers.
I will actually read just about anything because I love reading and have a curious mind.

Wow! Splendid. I like your attitude in reading. How I wish I could do the same attitude in reading like that. However, I think at this point time constrains me to follow suit because of my busy life. If ever I will have time for extra reading because whenever I have an opportunity I still prefer to read non-fiction. I think its better that I will try again beginning with the one I have mentioned above.
Now I got an idea to express why I prefer non-fiction, e.i. as you said to borrow your word and you are right "it's easier to read fiction (because all you need is to broaden your imagination), but when you read non-fiction has a longer and lasting rewards". that is actually what I want to express and thanks to you for giving the idea how to express that. You just expressed in one sentence my definite purpose in posting this dicussion.

I am the complete opposite of you! I don't even TOUCH non fiction books. I find them boring lol. I like to be able to use my imagination...and fiction books help me do that :) Not Non Fiction! :)

It's ok. They say that "opposite attracts". I hope that would hold true in our case. Hope someday that we'll get interested in our opposite interests. LOL.

I also prefer to read non-fiction. Reading non-fiction helps you to learn while being interesting at the same time. Occasionally I will read a fiction book but I always feel my time can be better used when I gain something from my reading other than simple entertainment.

I like both. I will read anything when my free time. For me reading is so important in life. Even you want to go to the toilet. You must know which is for women or man! I say that I hope my baby will start to read as soon as possible. Dont worry just read whatever you want. I hope you can read and read more. Be knowledgable and informative people! :)

Book reading Fiction or otherwise depends on the nature of the person reading it, it actually depends on the taste of that particular person...............

I think it is just a matter of personal taste. For me, I prefer to read the fiction books because it gets me away from the stress of everyday life. I get totally immersed into the storylines of the books I read. I read the Da Vinci Code and absolutely loved it, thought it was way better than the movie. I think I read the entire book over a 2 day period. I've always enjoyed reading fiction, though, since I was in 3rd or 4th grade

I guess that goes without saying that you really prefer reading fiction.

I prefer fiction over non-fiction, but I will read pretty much anything as long as it interests me. I love to read biographies over people I admire, as well as completly made up characters in a fantasy world. The wide variety of subjects keeps my imagination alive, and by reading both fiction and non fiction I can draw parallells between them.

I love to read also, but I mostly read sci-fi/fantasy.
Now, don't discount this. Most of the authors do research before they write. And you can learn things from them!
For instance, Issac Asimov had a PhD and he wrote about what he knew. Same for Robert Heinlein (he was an engineer). Mercedes Lackey researched before she wrote some of her books (I can't remember the title right now, but she always does research!).
I've learned a lot of little things (things that make you go "Ah-ha! so that's the answer") from reading sci-fi/fantasy.
For me, non-fiction doesn't grab my attention enough to finish the book.
I'm a very prolific reader. If I didn't go online (lol), I could read about 10 books a week. As it is, when I do have new books to read, I can usually read a book a day (yes, I read fast! lol). For me, if the story keeps my attention, I start reading faster...just so I can find out what happens next!

I prefer fiction books and I am usually lost in the writers narration. Sidney Sheldon , Dan brown are my favourites. The best books I have ever read are sidney sheldon's "Rage of Angels" and Dan's "Angels and Demons".
Cheers !

Would you consider reading more and try to read also non-fiction so that you decipher more which category you really prefer?
