I heard if you want a pet dog, you could get a spoodle (crossbreed of a spaniel and a poodle). I read it somewhere, that this breed's hypoallergenic.
However, if you really want to have pets even though you're asthmatic, you could settle for fish. They're really relaxing and nice to look at.

I have some allergies so I was looking into this subject about a year or so ago (now I am in an apt where no pets allowed so it is just as well that I did not buy pet at that time...). Dogs that an allergic person could have: 1) Greyhounds. These have been bred to be companions for so many centuries that their coat produces little or no dander and they are almost scentless. 2) Poodles, I am told, do not have dander - but they require lots of grooming attention so they are not for everyone. Most allergies are related to dander issues so while it may be surprising to list poodles here, you have to look for low-dander pets as opposed to merely low-fur or low-shedding animals. 3) most short-haired pets such as daschund, doberman, and the like, are much better options for persons with allergy problems. The worst is probably the German Shepherd as their coat produces an oil with a definite, strong scent.
Other pet options are fish of course. We can rule out furry things like rabbits, ferrets, hamsters, etc. Reptiles are an intriguing option, lots of varieties and they are so interesting.

People who are slightly allergic can usually not tolerate angora rabitts and angora cats.
Angora is extremely fine fur.
People who are severely affected can not tolerate any fur at all. There is not such a thing as being allergic to dogs hair. It depends on how fine the texture of the fur is and a dog has relatively corse hair.
People who can not tolerate animal hair still can have a turtle as a pet. Turtles do not have any hair.
